basing large infantry, opinions wanted
« on: July 09, 2012, 07:58:22 PM »
What do people think for basing Ogres/Trolls/Kroxigors and the like? Two rows of two? Or a row of two and a single model, alternating which is in the front for every other stand.

The second method will require fewer models but does it still look alright compared to the 2 by 2? I'm concered the 2 by 2 will also obscure a lot of the rear models to begin with.

I use to base them 3 per base alternating figures

3 for Ogres and Trolls looks fine to me.  Larger models are always a difficult "play by ear" kind of affair.  Don't know about Kroxigors.

I believe most of the newer larger infantry (Kroxigors and Rat Ogres) only come with enough for 3 per base anyway. Those are probably a moot point, no reason to buy another pack to go 4 per base.

I only put 3 models per base, otherwise it just seems so artificial.

You can choose to alternate the single model to front and back or always keep the single model on the front, both look good IMHO.

Jo

Dave is right about the number of models contained in a single blister; there are only 9 ratogres/kroxis. In my opinion 4 models make the base look too crowded and 3 look much nicer. With the normal ogres you get 12 models in a blister, so you could actually place 4 on each base. A reason for this might be that ogres have 4 hits, while trolls have only 3?

My idea is to add some skinks to my kroxigor bases. I think this would be rather nice.

I would always base them 3 per stand. Kroxies have the advantage of having rather narrow poses, so they can easily go in one row of 3 guys.
But since ogres and trolls are wider, 4 per base is almost too crowded imho.

I've based mine "the way they come in the packet" i.e. a pack of Ogres is 12 figures and 3 bases, so I do them 4 to a base. Trolls come as 9 figures and 3 bases so I do them 3 to a base (alternating one forward and two back or two forward and one back). Don't collect Lizardmen so don't know about basing them!

As a related side issue comment, I base light cavalry 3 figures to a base as in 4s they look too 'heavy' e.g. my wolf riders look much better in swarms of 3 in my opinion. These, I tend to base two forward and one back or two back and one forward. Sometimes I spread them out and sometimes I 'clump' them together. It looks good and random when they're all together.

Here is an example how my kroxigors are based. Imho adding another one to the base would be too much. What do you think?

Ya, I'm pretty much set on 3 per, alternating 2/1 in the front row. It saves figures/money and all the cool kids are doing it.
