FINAL STAGE MAINTENANCE - Please read
« on: July 20, 2012, 08:28:53 AM »

In the ongoing process of upgrading and focussing on this site and these boards, we are about to get to work on the final stage. And that final stage is.....

These boards and the SG annex will be split off to form its own seperate site.

Therefore, these boards will be offline from Tuesday 24th July 2012, at around 11am UK time.

It is expected that the transfer will take up to 48 hours. I am hopeful that it will all go well and should be done within 6 hours, but I have done this enough times to know that it can take longer.

After the transfer, this site and these boards will reopen at the new location. So, you will be able to log in and check these forums at:-

www.specialist-arms.com

Initially, the site and boards will be an exact copy of what we have here. However, the aim is to expand the site in several areas, primarily to create resources and sub-sections for each of the games represented here.

When the new site is up and running and tested, this area will be removed.

Thanks for your support guys. And, I am very open to suggestions on how to expand and grow the site and this community to create the biggest and best all-encompassing SG community and resources available.

Thanks for the advanced notice CS, and for all the hard work on trying to improve the forums.  I'll look forward to seeing how the new site turns out.

Specialist Arms? We're going to have a huge influx of Mega Man fans.

Hopefully not  :D.

That said, an influx of members into some of the dead areas of this board would be welcomed, in order to generate more discussion.

Ha. I hadn't made the connection to Mega Man. Specialist Arms came about because I wanted to retain the link to the SG range, but not be copyright infringing. I think that it also captures the 'warband and battle' theme.

As for increasing traffic, that is a primary concern of mine from this point on. I do think that expanding the actual site into the games and resources is a strong move, and there are a few other plans to consider, but I am also more than happy to take suggestions.

Why not merge with the Tactical Command forum?

Personally I miss the BFG section of TC.

Why not merge with the Tactical Command forum?

Personally I miss the BFG section of TC.

It's an option, but doesn't Tactical Command already have enough boards?  There are also a number of the boards there which are not exactly used a great deal without adding boards from here which are also lacking in activity (although BFG is the most active section here - see below).

The other problem is that if you divert BFG away from here.  What does that leave?  There isn't much activity here outside of BFG, so you woulkd effectively have a dead forum.  Or, as I suspect, are you suggesting merging this entire forum with tactical command?  If this is so, then there's still the problem I outlined above to contend with.

Finally, I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again.  SMF is a massively superior  piece of forum software than whatever the software is over at tactical command.  This is why I'm going to be posting any of my own Epic articles and contributions over here, and simply linking them to Tactical Command where appropriate.  If a merger were to take place, and SMF were to be lost as the forum software, I would be very disappointed about it.

The big factor is an issue of focus. The boards were originally split (by that, I mean that BFG content was moved from TacCmd to these boards) to focus both sets of forums. If these are 'SG dedicated' then they should have BFG as a Specialist Game, and so if it was also over on TacCmd it would duplicate forums (yeah, I see the irony in that given the state of Epic  :P ). But, more to the point, TacCmd would be a '6mm and 10mm dedicated forum.... and BFG'.

But, I assume that the question is more about 'why aren't all SG games covered over on TacCmd so we dont need this forum?' It's really about the direction that both sites are going in. TacCmd is becoming a more general army scale discussion area while this place is expanding in the near future to cover resources, downloads, etc. It gives us more flexibility and freedom. For example, SG really does need a 'hub' on the web. I can't think of any other site that acts as a SG dedicated portal, and the ability to tighten in on that theme (and not include a variety of 6mm games from other manufacturers, for example) means that the site purpose is clearer, and organisation and navigation should (hopefully!) be better.

Besides.... now we get your web stat hits twice!  :o ;D
