Playing Warmaster not allowed in GW stores?
« on: November 16, 2012, 12:47:08 AM »
Hi there everyone,

I just have been to a GW store and they told me that one cannot play warmaster (and other specialst games) in the store. The person who told me this was new (at least new to this store). I am going to ask the regular guy next time.

Anyways, Im writing this since this situation made me sad. Not terrible sad, but still.... this attitude seem offputting especially since I just (like 5 minutes before) bought a huge warmaster bretonian army from them. ???

There has also been reports of scratch builds not being allowed.

Simply put, if they do not sell it in the store, it is not welcome.

Remember, they are not a gaming company any more - they are a liscence company. As long as their liscence is selling, they do not really care.

This has been the case for at least 3 years.   I think at least 5 years, even.  There was a GREAT PURGE when they decided that is going to be the 3 "core" systems and if you mentioned an SG inside a store to a staffer they twitched and their face fell.

When I (very rarely) set foot inside a GW store now (I only really buy paints from them now) and they pounce and say have you seen shiny new toy X and what armies/games do you play? I tell them warmaster. Sometimes I have honestly been met with "Is that a GW game?" The more common response is "Cool?" somewhat undermined by a face falling and a rapid loss of interest.

I don't blame the retail guys - they are only doing what they are told. I bet they wouldn't let you play Dreadfleeet now unless there were some boxes in the store still up for sale.

Still, no point in crying about nostalgia for the old games workshop to come back. It isn't going to happen. Just vote with your feet and buy into other companies. The only GW figures I buy now are the odd bit of warmaster to finish armies off.

Dave (Rant over - I feel better now)

Last time I was in a GW shop, I entered to buy green putty.
The clerk came straight to me before I even could take a relaxed view of the shop to offer me a new WH40k box-game just released.

I said: "I'd like just some green stuff, please", and the guy started the typical question battery "what do you play, what army, etc".

Then I said: " I don't play Warhammer", just that, and the guy was looking at me as if reality was falling down around apart...  ;D LOL ... his face was: "it can't be!! a guy that doesn't play WH??? in this shop??"...

After his initial shock he resumed offering and showing me WH and WH40k figures and stuff I was not going to buy and had NO interest, instead of asking me about green stuff, modeling tools, etc...  ???

I don't say them I play WM, because it's time wasted too  ::)

I don't blame the retail guys - they are only doing what they are told.

Right, man...

I ain't crying.  I never experienced any "golden age".  Just telling it how it is. =-P

Let me cross post from my local gaming forum:

"Ventured to GW Maidenhead yesterday to get some green stuff for fixing all the gaps in the Normans. I also got a fresh pot of Primer for undercoating the models, and a small drybrush as I think my ancient knackered soft brushes aren't cutting the mustard anymore.

Blimey I should channel Simon Hoggart and write a sketch of what it's like to go into a GW nowadays.

It was a new bloke who seemed perturbed that I came in with a narrow set of things I knew I wanted. He tried a little to ask what armies I might play but when realising I was already at the till with my wallet and he was losing the chance to "UPSELL", he was a good little blackshirt and mentioned the new 'eavy metal paint set, the new basing kits etc. That was fine, they are interesting in their own way. But then, he had... dice shakers. DICE SHAKERS. Only £4 a shot, lol. Little faux leather dice cups. I politely declined. It was really grasping at straws. "

A great way to get rid of pesky GW employees who want to sell you White Dwarves or other miniatures is to say "I only play Warmaster and Epic" and *poof* theyre gone. :)
Warmaster:
- Bretonia
- Dwarves
- Highelf WIP

Epic:
-Imperial Guard
-Necrons
-Space Marines WIP

I was really disappointed as the previous time I went in, there was a /different/ new guy - and he knew the drill but let me talk about things - I said I was painting High Elves for both Warhammer and Warmaster, and he twigged and was amused that I was doing it in both scales!

Haven't seen that guy since. ;.;
