Undead vs Dwarves and High Elves
« on: January 07, 2013, 04:30:37 AM »
Hello Folks!

Some of the guys at the local club have decided to dust off the Warmaster Fantasy minis and play a few games again.  Here is a report from my first game in years.  The pictures were taken with my iphone and are fuzzy and crappy, but hopefully you can see what is going on.

The match was 3000 points of Bruce's Undead vs 1500 points each of my High Elves and Dale P's Dwarves.

Starting positions:

First two turns of near zero movement for the Elves:

First two turns of movement for the Dwarves:

View from the Dwarf King's ruins. These appeared important because they were impassable to cavalry, but they did not provide cover from bow fire and artillery, and that quickly proved to be a problem:

Mid game, the Undead catch the Dwarves moving from their hill to a nearby forest, and it all seems to go downhill for the good guys from there:

The Dwarves eventually make it to the Woods, but they have been bypassed and the Undead cavalry brigade is threatening the Dwarven Artillery brigade. The High Elves are making bad command rolls and are crawling along. It helps that the Undead are ignoring the Elves to focus on the Dwarves:

The High Elves are eventually able to get into charge range on their side of the battle. and they take out a chunk of the Undead fast Brigade on that side:

Last stages of the game. Elves and Dwarves kill off more undead, but things are looking grim:

Last picture of the game. The second wave of fast undead on the Dwarven side manage to finish off the Dwarf King's Brigade and the Dwarves reach their breakpoint. The High Elves are nearing their breakpoint. The Undead have taken losses, but have managed to spread them out such that the actual number of units off the field is not as close. The Elves also decide to leave the field as it was unlikely they could change the outcome.

It was a great game overall and I had a good ol' time - even though I lost.

Didn't take us long to get back into the swing of things after dusting off the Warmaster book. I still believe this is one of GW's better games - ever. We must play this again.   Soon and Often.

EDIT: linked the pictures.  Man, I'm going to have to bring a better camera next game.  haha

Great exciting game. Love the games that undead wins :), even more if they beat dwarves.

I see you played 2 generals (dwarf + high elf) vs 1 general (undead) is that correct?

did you use the regular high elf list or the tournament high elf list?

I also see the use of lot zombie dragon, interesting, do you recommend taking 1 dragon per 1000 points?

Nice colourful armies, and great report! thanks for sharing

Thanks Lex!

When I get some time over the next few days I'll try and set all the photographs properly.

Yep, we had three players. So The other and Dale and I played our Good armies against Bruce's Undead.

We just used the regular list.  For the next couple of games we are trying to use the original book rules as written. We plan to add back in our house rules as we play some more.  Most of out house rules were pulled from WMA. I'm sure lots of other people do that as well.  A couple I liked were 1) Two rounds of combat only like WMA, and 2) Infantry Stands in support are counted before stand removal.  We had a number of others, but those are the two that I remember the most.

That's an interesting point.  Bruce forgot the box that held all his Carrion Birds, so he made a quick points adjustment by adding more Zombie Dragons. It seemed to work well for his list as he had them zipping across the battlefield to reinforce critical battles as needed. We'll see if he uses large numbers of them again.

Thanks for the replies people.  I'll try and remember to document the next session in a couple of weeks.

Our last game http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=5049.0 we were three player also, and one player, enbaji, points out that is more fair playing two armies (1000 + 1000)vs two armies (1000 + 1000), instead one army (2000) vs two armies (1000 + 1000).

One player command two different 1000 points armies. Each army with its general and couldn't brigade with the the other armies units. Also each army has its breakpoint.

I played with two armies, and I saw the difference when I had to make the list. It is completly different to think about 1 army of 2000 points than 2x1000 points.

I like the experience, and convience me that is more fair. Also the game doesn't seems slowlier.
