Speaking of Spells...
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:12:24 PM »
Carrington's thread about Raise Dead reminded me about another spell question, this one concerning Rage of Chaos. It came up both in our game yesterday and one earlier in the week against Dave.

Assuming the Chaos player rolls his extra attacks and doesn't roll doubles (so all the extra attacks are directed towards the enemy), does the full number of attacks apply from round to round of combat, even if the chaos unit loses stands?
In both situations, I had units with two stands that subsequently lost one. The three of us (Carrington, Dave, and myself) couldn't find anything in the rules about subtracting rage of chaos attacks when one stand that generated them is no longer there.
My reasoning for keeping all the attacks was 1) it doesn't say keep track of which stand rolls what attacks, 2) neither does it say "subtract x number of attacks for stands lost, 3) fluffwise, its some nasty demon things making the extra attacks, not the stands themselves, and 4) subtracting attacks for stands lost seems like it would represent an amount of book keeping inconsistent with WM in general.

However, Rage of Chaos is an incredibly powerful spell (potentially), so I wanted to confirm these notions before I used it again.

We play that you keep the attacks, but this does make for an incredibly powerful unit for that round of combat.

I usually use it (and it's skaven counterpart) to boost weak units like hounds.
Even then these can chew through knights very easily and much to the dismay of my friend.
I have yet to try casting it on a unit of chaos knights :)
Oh the carnage!

I will be interested to see the outcome of this discussion.

If you loose a stand you only use the attacks that the stand would have made but the spell is not affected by the unit size.

Yeah, the first time I used it was on a weakened unit of Marauders, then a weakened unit of hounds. If you're unlucky enough to roll doubles on two dice, then you only lose a crappy unit. With the hounds I was greedy: I rolled a 6 followed by a 5, IIRC.... Nice!

Heh.. I was trying to remember the other question I had from our game.  That was itl.. Yes.  A nasty spell....one that makes the 20 or 30 point rod of repetition (or whatever it is) magic Item well worth while.

I'm realizing I need to pay more attention to the magic items-- I can think of a unit of cats that might have been pulled away from their catnip at the appropriate time.  >:(
