I hate Wood Elves
« on: April 23, 2009, 05:41:27 PM »
I'll kick off here with the new forum.

I'm running a Pact team in my local league (we're playing 5.0 with the most recent Rules Review).  Got 200k in inducements against a developed WE team in my most recent match and got absolutely run.  6-0.  Oof.  Set up the cage, he leaps in, gets the block result (even the 1/2d block result against Zzharg, who was one of my inducements), never failed a ball-handling roll and scored.  Rinse and repeat times six.  Broke AV7 three times the entire match.  One stun and two KOs.  Oh, and my chainsaw rolled snake-eyes on his only armor break attempt.

My understanding of how to beat wood elves may be lacking.  My understanding was to hit everything in sight, put TZs on people and the ball, then wait for them to fail the dodges.  How do you deal when they don't fail the dodges or ball-handling rolls?  At this point, I'm thinking the slight WE nerf to the catchers for proposed 6.0. is a nerf in name only.

I know general anti-WE tactics have been discussed in other locations, but it seems like a good topic to launch the new forum, since WE appear on their face to be the top of the table.

Thanks.

You at least have to understand that Chaos Pact team is not an easy team at the start.

But remember high TV teams can really hurt the Woodies, you just need to develop Block, MB, tackle guys plus a few Guards here and there can be a nightmare for woodies.

My last game as woodies was in the finials with a Norse team (both our team where TV 220+). He got the win due to planning, positioning and breaking my poor woodies necks then of course i rolled a few critical double 1's one to draw the game).

ATM, your meant to be a bashy team with chaos pact and i assume your team is relatively new, hence no real skills to put them into the ground.

And yeah i played with the new rules of catches, it really hurts my running games.

To be honest, a game where your opponent doesn't roll any bad dice will hurt, regardless of what team you're facing, especially if you're having a bad time with the dice in return.

It would been a lot worse for you if the teams (but not the dice) were reversed.  A WE team on a good-dice day will just beat you badly in the score.  A bashy team on a good-dice day will beat you badly in scores and cas.

I don't have tons of experience playing against wood elves, only about 4 or 5 games total against them I think. But from my experience what others have said holds true. They are a fast team that with good dice can do just about whatever they want.

When I play them I normally focus my blocks and blitzes. From what you said you seemed to be trying to punch everyone and make your opponent roll as many dodges as possible. That not a bad approach but some more focused effort is worthwhile. For example, always try to use your blitz to hit the same guy. (this doesnt have to be the ball carrier, although its nice when it is). Keep doing this until that guy is out of the game. If need be foul, with the Pact team your marauders can be great foulers and expendable. I'm not a big proponent of fouling but sometimes it just has to be done, when that wardancer goes down you know he's just going to jump up and run off so foul him.

Inducing a skilled maruader mercenary could also have helped. Either to help your team handle the ball or to help bash the other team. (Guard, Mighty Blow, Tackle, Dirty Player, etc) The key in my opinion to playing against elf teams is taking fellas off the pitch. Thin their ranks and start running the board.

From your description it seems the dice were against you. Maybe some quality time with your Chaotic gods could help as well.
Cheers.

Its a given that whenever i faced an experienced opponent, my two wardancers with at least 3 skills each, tend to get fouled a lot whenever they get knocked down.

Wood Elves are a very expensive team and will not have a large number of reserves. You just have to grind them away. Its a fact of life that my players die. If too many good players die on my team, i'll be forced to retire my due, due to extremely high spiraling expense i cant afford to buy new expensive players such as a Wardancer at 120 K. Lucky for me they where extremely lucky with injury roll's. :p

If you play against elves regularly i would probably go for tentacles on several of your team members (the stronger the better), along with a fair bit of tackle on the team to try and negate their dodging.

I feel your pain, I get creamed by WEs a lot, cant really tell you anything you probably don't already know, but i defend deep in my half, generally a blitzer or bull centaur 6 squares away from my end zone, to try and catch/hurt the wardancer. an opponent I had liked to move his WDs up the edge of the pitch, until i frenzyd him into the crowd :D
