The Ultimate Warmaster
« on: June 24, 2013, 06:08:35 AM »
Well,
first and foremost I would like to say hello. I am new here (well new as in member) but I have been browsing for a while.
I have been playing Warmaster since its release and I love the game. Alot of my mates Role play, 40k, Fantasy battles, ancients etc. So I figured its time to get them into Warmaster, or back into it.

What I decided to do was make 'The Ultimate Warmaster' competition.

I currently have 4 players (all I want at the moment) and we will be compeating over a 6 game period to get points. This will place us on a leader board.

3 points - win
2 points - draw
1 point - loss
+1 point - kill the enemy general

after the 6 rounds, position 1 plays 4. 2 plays 3. and the winners from those games will play in the Grand final to secure the title of The Ultimate Warmaster. The winner will also be presented with a trophy and a case of beer! Yay Beer!

Anyways my 4 players are very keen and we will be having 1200ish points intro games this weekend just to get everybody back into the swing of things. 1 of the players has not played before, so it will be a learning game! Yes that's right, we now have a new Warmaster player in the community.

So if its alright with you all, I would like to post battle reps of the games. Also keep everybody up to date on the proceedings.

The 4 armies that will be smashing it out are: Empire, Tomb Kings, Skaven and Dwarves.

I am playing the Tomb Kings (I really want to play Ogres, however I don't have the models, and we are very much against subbing) maybe that could be a future project of mine.  :o

I'd definitely be interested in this - I'm a fairly new player too. I've picked up a skaven and a dwarf army to try and get a friend into it as well so it'd be good to see some battle reports featuring these two races.

Ogre Army...

I've just bought some 15mm orcs from Ral Partha Europe. They are a mm perfect match to the official Ogre figures but in a much greater range. I am waiting for the rest of my order but the figs i picked up in store are perfect.

Ok so the first game is tonight! YAY!  ;D

We have decided to jump straight into a 2000 point "learning game".

My list is as follows:

Tomb Kings:

- Tomb King
- Liche Priest (Ring of Magic)
- Liche Priest (Rod of Repetition)
- Liche Priest
- 4 x Skeleton Bowmen
- 8 x Skeleton Warriors
- 3 x Skeleton Chariots
- 4 x Skeleton Cavalry
- 1 x Bone Giant
- 1 x Sphinx
- 2 x Bone Throwers
- 2 x Skull Chukkas

This list is 5 points over, but we don't mind so much. Anyway, when you guys see it on the table it will be the 'silver legion'. Over the course of the games I will be painting it up, so by the end I will have a full 3000 points of tomb kings painted. (Well that's the plan).
I am really excited to play this game tonight, its been a long time since I last played.
I am playing against Skaven tonight. I will post the Skaven list when I do the battle report.

As a skilled "Undead" player may I give you a recommendation.

You need "mass" when playing undead and you have to much cost intensive units in your set up of army.
Especially when playing against Skaven !!!

Use more Skelettons (Spearmen and Bowmen)
Use more Chariots
Skelletton Cavalry is nice but don´t use 4 units when playin 2k points.

Reduce your selection of.....

- 1 x Bone Giant
- 1 x Sphinx
- 2 x Bone Throwers
- 2 x Skull Chukkas

....as you have more then 25% of your army points put into this units.

I don´t want to give you a specific set up for Undeads but you will not have a lot of fun when not considering the core rule for "undeads" which is ....get as much units as you can with a viable choice of units that have enough punch in close combat.

Otherwise have fun playing this army as it is a stilish one and let us know your experiences made with it.

Regards
Claus

Claus: I really wish I had seen your reply before the actual game, but alas I did not.
After playing my original list that I presented I agree with everything that you have said.

I found that my Horsemen where quite Meh... I would have been better off taking 8 more units of warriors instead. I am also going to drop either the bone giant or sphinx, (probably the giant) and take another unit of chariots.

I found the war machines quite good in targeting the skaven in the woods etc. (as you will see in the battle report). I don't want to give away the results of the game now, but lets just say that the skaven player used the terrain to his advantage very very well. All in all I had 9 units that really could not get to him because of forests, etc. It really hampered my ability, and I had to rely on my skeleton warriors to try and weed him out, not an easy task for skeletons at the best of times, and even harder when they need 5+ to hit! On the + side, I LOVE Liche Priests. Raise Dead is my new all time favorite spell. This really helped me in some combats.

re carrion worth trying to fit in? They look decent, but how is the symetry with the rest of the army?

Static is an understatement. Wow its a slow army. 20cm command range! We move very slow...  :o

Anyways I will rejig my list and post up the new one here soon for my 2nd trial against Dwarfs or Empire.

Carrions are allways a good choice against cavalry units but not against skaven as skaven can pursue every unit.
For  skaven you need mass and of course the spell to raise dead....most powerfull spell for undead army.

Bone Giant and Sphinx....both ar good units as causing terror having a good save and having enough attacks.
Skull Chukka is also good but I don´t like the bone throwers.

You need to play this army for a while to find the right army setup fitting best to your playstile ;)

However I was unable to upload photos. It was telling me the files were too large.
Can somebody advise me how I get around this problem?

Not knowing which image editor you use, I'm not sure what to tell you, but here are some general hints.

First, be sure you're saving the images as JPGs. Second, be sure to set the resolution of the image to something lower than 100dpi. 72 is the usual, and is more than adequate for most battles. If your camera has a high megapixel rating, then it's saving high res images, which is fine for many purposes but not the web.
