Thank you but for a sticky tutorial or article this may be a bit short. ;)

Next update will be from my Skaven (so my own miniatures :) ).

Superb stuff. Many thanks for this. It's almost exactly how I'd imagined you'd done it. I was hoping but not expecting that you'd have some cunning time-saving tips but this is 'real painting' and very much what I tend to do myself. I'll pack up some toys for my forthcoming trip to Germany and see how close I can get to the look you've got. The only change I might make is to use foundation paints for the base red and greys as I seem to remember my Scab Red being a little too thin and speed will be of the essence.

Thanks again, and do please keep sharing, these look superb.

Ok ye, vallejo colours do a much better job, but citadel are for this low painting standard much more comfortable bec. of their pots. You may want to know this tab. http://www.librarium-online.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-169833.html for vallejo-citadel colour matches.

You can also try to use the high end colours (blood red and skull white) and then use the washes. The use of the citadel washes is much faster than layering and may even look a bit better than this hard highlights.

Fortress grey and scab red on the black primer is no problem, because if you thin the colours with water a bit, then it automatically runs to the hollow parts of the miniature. On high surfaces you dont need a clean grey (or red) colour, because another layer of white (or bright red) comes over it.

Greetings and yes, I'll keep painting+posting ;)

Nice little step-by-step. I note that you only use two steps for your red, I personally tend to use about five or six depending on if I'm going to add a blazing orange final highlight. I have relatively recently discovered that using the foundation red, with a red was and a blood red highlight works quite well on its own for a quick result though.

Talking of which, on the subject of painting white, specifically white cloth. I think that there are two main routes for this, the grey route which you've gone for, and the brown route which I ended up using for my Reiklanders. As the main colour is white, without having to worry about quarters (I had started doing Averlanders, I didn't get past painting a single strip...), I use a black undercoat, bestial brown 'gunk brush', then followed by a skull white 'gunk brush', which is followed up with a clean 'once over' with skull white before moving onto re-painting the details in black and then working back up from there.

I really should do a step-by-step one of these days...

This is madness!!! *persianvoice* :D

Wow five or six layers for a whole unit sounds like alot of work on 10mm, even my heroes only get 4 depending on the color.

Yes well, for 'rank and file' reds, I just go through the Citadel reds, so that's three, maybe with a touch of orange at the top. However for extra-quick results you can if you're careful get away with just using blood red by glazing it a bit, IoW watering it down so much that on the first pass about 50% of the black undercoat shows through.

Anyway, needless to say I haven't finished many models with each colour using 4+ layers in WM. Perhaps my most detailed 'finished' model is probably the yellow wizard I painted ages ago that appeared in Warmag. I really haven't been able to do hardly any painting these last four years or so, but saying that I did stay up until 3am last night re-honing my skills on some WH40K figures that I've had 'on the go' for ages now. It turns out that most of my paints have dried to that 'solid gloopy' stage, and a fair few of my inks have dried out completely. Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a box of GW's new washes sooner than I'd hoped, especially as my local store is going to be running a Terminator painting comp to line up with the release of Space Hulk...

Very useful the link, and also the paint guide. It will be great to have more of these. This summer I have no time to paint, but when I could, maybe I try to make also one of these guides. It will be great if all of us do it to see different manners of painting!

Here you go, just to prove that the all the work you did on the step-by-step guide wasn't for nothing here's one of mine painted almost exactly according to your specification:

Not difficult to do but it took me absolutely ages (so I guess difficult to do quickly!). I'm really pleased with the result - although they're not quite as neat as yours these chaps will do fine on the tabletop. Thanks again.

Thanks, given that I was aiming to replicate the look you pioneered I'm delighted that you like them. As for the speed, I've stalled horribly. I'd planned to paint up a load of stuff this week (I undercoated 700 pts worth but so far (after four days) all I've got to show for my efforts is that one strip of infantry and a strip of cavalry! I'm hoping that when I get the six strips of halberdiers finished I'll find that the 8-man stands of archers are quicker to do!

Beautiful paint jobs.

I hate to say it, but I get very interested in monochrome imperial uniforms when I think of painting up my Halberdiers.  Nuln, maybe?

 ;D ;D ;D

I thought Nuln myself and haven't ruled it out despite having started the first six strips. In fact, the fact that I'm still painting those same six strips makes it all the more tempting! I guess using handgunners as 'counts as' crossbows would keep it all fluffy and nice. But just how good would an all-black army look on the tabletop? I feel a test stand coming on...

I'd have to try to look for some Brunswicker Napoleonics or the like -- gold or silver facings would stand out nicely.

I'd also probably snip the musketeers and crossbowmen into singles and base 5/base -- more opportunity for a nice flocking job.
