[MoW] Swabbing the Poop Deck...
« on: July 27, 2013, 12:12:36 PM »
Not too much Man O' War here, any interest in pics?

This is the Man O' War Empire fleet that I started a year ago. I've finally got all the ships and bases to the point where I can paint them all at the same time (important as I regularly paint things at different times that are slightly different from one another).

These Ironfist conversions were the biggest hold up (specifically, not being motivated to make them). I took the mortar end from the regular Ironfist, cut it off, and glued it on to the oar end of a metal Wargalley. It bothered me that the Ironfist had the same stats as the Wargalley but looked so different/didn't have oars.

I've got a heap of Man O' War fleets but have never found a willing opponent. Good to see someone's doing something with the game still!

What are the bases made from?

Plasticard, and the waves are sculpted with wood putty. I put them on metal washers so they can slide around a bit easier on the board.

Thanks guys. I got some base coating done this week. The bases are blue, although I think I need to do a second coat on a few of them. My plan is to paint them something close to the Dreadfleet scheme, I started with Necron Abyss.

The ships I hit with Mechrite Red, and then washed with Devlan Mud. This also showcases my crazy plan to keep my fingers off the ships as I paint them. I drilled some holes in a 1" square piece of balsa and mounted the ships on nails. I did something similar for the masts as well, gluing them to plasticard (and then that to cardboard as the plasticard was too flimsy).

When I was a kid I had the MoW catalogue and would pore over all the models imagining battles.

But I was billy no mates so it all remained a dream. :-<

MOW is my favourite GW game for years.

There is a large group of fan you can join at TheSeaOfClaw yahoo group here : http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/theseaofclaws/

Our blog is here : http://theseaofclaws.blog.fr/

And mine here (in french) : http://manowarfr.blog.fr/

I would like to translate everything i put on my french blog on the international one but it takes so much time...

As for your fleet, i really like the colours you have chosen. MOW is an old game and too frequently we see models looking like the ships we had in the GW rules or magazines... Blue, red, green... Painting job has evolved since 1993, and it's a good thing to see those old ship with decent modern ideas. Really !

I'm not fond of basing the ships, but loads of players do. Easier to pick the figs on the table they say.

About the Hellhammers, there had been two versions. The first one did not had oars, but the second one did. The models where only available through mail order if i remember well.

Work continues on the Empire ships. The red is nearly done, I just have to finish three more Wargalleys and then do the highlights. After that I start in on the black and try not to mess up the red...

I've taken one Wolfship a couple steps further. Here's what I'm planning on doing with the red for the rest, and the stern has the black highlighting done as well.

I forgot that I need to put the pennant poles on the top of the masts, so I'll have to go back and do that before I start painting them. I was planning on doing them the same as the decks.

And then finally will come the bases. Still hoping to have these done by the end of the month.

Really really nice. Your fleet will be very consequent with so many figs.

I do council you to study too the sail problem. If you just take the sails proposed by GW, you will have nice sails from the front... And ugly white paper from behind.

With that quality of painting, it would be a shame ! At least, wash them with a cream paint. Before you set the sails on the yards. After that, you will be able to glue the yards on the masts, and the masts on the ship.

I really council you do do that this way, better than gluing the masts and then the yards.
