proxy ideas: Dwarf
« on: August 04, 2013, 01:27:21 PM »
As many of you know, since GW stopped producing 10mm figures, I have started making lists that map warmaster troop types to miniatures that are widely available today:
http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/2013/07/warmaster-miniatures-in-the-post-gw-era/

There are several armies I haven't prepared yet, so I am turning this into a collaborative effort. Feel free to post ideas/links here and I will sum it up on the blog post to have everything collected there. I will try to keep it up to date as new lines are released to cover the gap in the 10mm market.

so this thread is about the Dwarves:

Warriors
Handgunners
Rangers
Troll Slayers
Cannon
Flame Cannon
Gyrocopter
General
Hero
Runesmith
Anvil

Should be quite easy to compile the above with Pendraken figures. Eureka have some nice armored dwarves that are more compatible with GW in size.

Kallistra and Pendraken offer lots of options here. The Kallistra fantasy ranges are based on the Pendraken figures, but cast on strips.
Pendraken offer two dwarf ranges, Dwarves and Hill Dwarves. The Dwarves are older, and a bit more of a caricature, big bodies, small legs. The Hill Dwarves are probably more similar to the GW figures in size.

Warriors
Kallistra Warriors 201
Pendraken Hill Dwarves FHD1, FHD2, FHD3, FHD4, FHD5, FHD9
Pendraken Dwarves FD1, FD3, FD4, FD6, FD23, FD24
Eureka 400FAN21 Anvil Dwarves
Irregular TFAN7 Axemen
Magister Militum FDW001
Note, Pendraken offer both hand weapon and spear armed infantry which can be useful to build different looking units, or units that can be used under other rules as well.

Handgunners
Kallistra Shooters 202 (these have both bows and handguns)
Pendraken Hill Dwarves FHD8
Pendraken Dwarves FD22

Rangers
Kallistra Shooters 202 (the bow armed figures)
Pendraken Hill Dwarves FHD6
Pendraken Dwarves FD2 bow, FD6 with Axe, FD10 hooded with sword

Troll Slayers
Kallistra Berserkers 203
Pendraken Hill Dwarves FHD15, FHD16, FHD17, FHD18, FHD19
Pendraken Dwarves FD20

Cannon
Kallistra Cannon 204
Pendraken Hill Dwarves FHD13, FHD12
Pendraken Dwarves FD11

Flame Cannon
Pendraken Hill Dwarves FHD20 flame thrower?

Gyrocopter
Kallistra Gyro-Bomber 205
Pendraken Hill Dwarves FHD14
Pendraken Dwarves FD12

General & Heroes
Kallistra Command pack 209
Most of the Pendraken figures could be used as commanders, as they are single based.
Pendraken Dwarves FD7 command, FD9 High King
Irregular TFAN9 Chief, TFAN10 Standard bearer

Runesmith
Pendraken Dwarves FD8 wizards, FD16 Druids

Anvil
We have used the Pendraken Cook and Stove for this!! FD15

Here are some pictures of one of our group's Dwarf army, the figures are nearly all Kallistra

awesome army

I have a HOTT army based on the pendraken Hill Dwarves. Full of character those figures!
I would not mix them with GW or Eureka, but if the whole army is build on pendraken/kallistra then it certainly works!

That army is an impressive sight!

I'm currently waiting for an order from pendraken, it should contain almost every model and variant available in the pendraken range, I'm planning on filling in the gaps in my dwarf army with them

I actually disagree on mixing them in with GW dwarfs, I think they would sit fine in the same army, the key in my experience is model density, if you snip your rangers and thunderers to get more bases for your buck, the pendraken models fit right in, if you keep them tightly ranked up, the fact that you can only get 8 pendraken models on a warmaster base makes them stand out

in my opinion if you have similar numbers of models on a base, it's less obvious

I've tried this with the anvil dwarfs mixed with GW characters and side by side with pendraken dwarf bases and irregular dwarf bases, it's hard to spot a difference unless you're really looking closely for it

hopefully I'll be able to demonstrate this soonish as I'm about to start work on my dwarf army :)

cheers Jchaos - unfortunately these are neither my figures or my painting! The army is owned by a member of the group I play with.

got an email from Mark (Copplestone Castings)

He just added some new packs to their 10mm fantasy range:

http://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/range.php?range=FAN

FM20 Dwarf Warriors
FM21 Dwarfs with Axes
FM22 Dwarfs with Spears

The Dwarfs are all around 9mm tall (about the same height as the orcs) - in comparison their humans and half-orcs are around 11mm tall.

Like the rest of the range each pack is designed to make a unit of three 40 x 20mm stands, including one command stand. Unlike most of the earlier 10mm packs these are designed so that they can easily be separated into single figures (or left in pairs for quicker basing).

Ah yes, people have been asking him to downscale the 15mm dwarves to 10mm.  Now we have an excellent dwarf warrior proxy!

My GW Dwarves seem to be around 8mm high, so the Copplestone ones at 9mm should be nicely compatible  :)

Now I have a way of expanding my Dwarf army to 3000 points and not have to remortgage the house by going down the Eureka route!  ;)

Edit: Not easy to tell from the photos but I make it that there are 11 different sculpts across the 3 units. So buying 3 packs and mixing them up should give a reasonably varied looking unit.

These are very cool indeed. I bought a stack of them last night, can't wait for them to arrive.

I've just measured my Eureka Dwarves and they are exactly 9mm from the base of their feet to the tops of their helmets, so the Eureka and Copplestone Dwarves should be perfectly compatible in regards to size.
