proxy ideas: Lizardmen
« on: August 04, 2013, 01:49:42 PM »
As many of you know, since GW stopped producing 10mm figures, I have started making lists that map warmaster troop types to miniatures that are widely available today and posted them on my blog.

for Lizardmen here is my list and feel free to either send comments on my blog, or use this thread to suggest improvements, alternatives etc

I agree with the Pendraken figures listed on the blog.

I would add a couple of options

Kroxigor
the 15mm Lizardmen from minibits (formerly with Pendraken).

Stegadon
I like DIN028 Ankylosaurus from Magister Militum - a good size, the texture of the back helps in building a howdah.
DIN033 Triceratops is perhaps a little small.

Carnosaur
DIN018 Carnotaurus - a good size. Needs a rider.

Irregular have  a few Lizardmen - they look very different style wise from the Pendraken ones, might do for temple guard though.

I have a hard time recommending irregular minis, very limited on the poses which can look a bit too regimented and fake, plus the batch of dwarfs I have really suffer with lots of flashing, I'll probably use them, but of all the various manufacturers I've stockpiled, they're really a level down in terms of quality compared to other models.... but then they're the cheapest around and not awful, just not as good as other things

Yes, Irregular never seem nice enough, or cheap enough to be worth getting - though I do like the look of their dwarves. I have a few Irregular figures that I have acquired over time, and most seem better in the flesh than on their website.

Irrgular lizardmen are cartoon like figures. Perfect to fight maybe the army of samurai apes or for Furry Armies. But if someone is willing to have an agressive / violent army I do not recomended

although excited about the Eureka release I was hoping for a more aztec looking theme. Lets hop Magister Militum does better when they release their version

More proxies from Magister Militum:

Skinks - FLA103 Frogmen infantry with crossbows
Saurus - FLA101 Lizardmen infantry with swords
Temple Guard - FLA102 Lizardmen infantry with spears
Cold One Riders - FLA401 Lizardmen lancers on therapods
Terradons - FLA201 Lizardmen on Pterosaur
Stegadons - FLA402 Frogmen with crossbow on Rhinosaur

The only slight problem with the last one is that it's three separate Rhinosaur miniatures, not one large creature. I guess you could always place all three on a single 40x60mm base though.

No photos on their website for the Lancers unfortunately.

I think MM are going to produce Frogmen on Alligators, so maybe they could proxy for Salamanders? They are also due to produce a command pack, will that include a "Giant Frogman General carried by Lizardmen on a palanquin"? Perhaps one of the command figures could be a Lizardman riding on something large and carniverous?

Its good to see all these new figures from MM - the more photos the better to see what they look like

MM already have a whole dinosaur range - so it may be possible to persuade them to add some lizardmen to some of them?

Hey, has anyone tried to make a Carnosaur mount using a Cold One from the Warhammer plastic range?

There's the Dark Elf one which is really detailed and vicious looking but you'd have to slice off and remodel bits of saddle and harness.

Then there's the Lizardman Saurus Cavalry one.  These look a lot goofier with ugly claws, despite being a 2004 sculpt, but they do have the right lizardmen glyphs and aesthetic.

I know that they're huge, but in Warmaster terms there are various larger models like dragons or proxies I've seen people use in larger scales that still fulfil the purpose.
