[BFG] Weapon Packs
« on: August 12, 2013, 01:44:14 PM »
Right, I've decided to give weapons a bash. Because why not? I'm going off the length of the broadside weapons slot on an Imperial Cruiser, so these should fit any Imperial ship with a weapons slot. I've gone for some gothic arching, though I think I've still got some trim to do... Thoughts?

Would anyone be interested in gothic weapons batteries for their Battlefleet Gothic ships? ;)
Since I'd like to offer casts of these to the community, I'd like to get community feedback to make sure that they're up to scratch.

I intend to add a ø3mm by 1.5mm hole in the back for magnetisation.

I´d be interested. How about the price? And, would be possible to make heavier batteries or bombardment cannons?

The general idea is for a full set of chaos and imperial weapons by the time I'm done. Starting with standard Imperial broadsides. If there's interest in heavier, the same design can cope with each gun taking up 2 windows, though a redesign would be required for 3-per-gun.

A set of turrets is on the cards too, along with the broadside mounts for them. Launch bays too!

I'll look into bombardment cannons, see what sort of mount they are and their general shape, I'd be happy to include some heavy artillery  ;D

It's just a shame that battleship armament doesn't have taller slots without some surgery, but I imagine I could design a gothic battleship at some point too... At some point I want to get the dauntless battery measurements too, so that I can make a matching weapons set for it!

Someone requested additional details, so I added some details to the base, but I'm most likely going to have to remove the strip indent after I took the measuring tool to it and found out just how small everything was. Between the inner faces of the arches, where the guns are, at the widest point, is only 1.5mm. No further detailing is required, methinks!

If this is even printable, I'll be very happy; if not, I shall have to scale up, or do a major redesign =[

I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

would love some extra turrets for some old hulls i found knocking around a box, but those weapon batteries are looking pretty good but like you mentioned needs some trim, unless you are building imperial ships that flow into the design

Have been thinking about doing something similar...

Suggestions:
Chop it off at the top of the lower arches so that the gun bays can be made taller. Then add a second bank of guns below the first bank like this:

Fiddling with a dorsal design atm, currently a sort of gazebo gun.

Since then it's been shortened somewhat, to allow for a roof area within the 5mm height I've assigned myself. It might shorten further. The general idea atm is that I'm struggling with just how to make a gun turret to be gothic; the shape just doesn't lend itself to the design. As a result, the basic idea for dorsal and broadside turrets is that the guns themselves will be classic design (possibly borrowing from WW2 inspirations), while their setting will be gothic, so a gothic gun gazebo like above for dorsal, and gothic platforms for the broadside lance batteries.

Another thing that may yet happen is that the walls of this will be closed up completely, the entire thing squashed significantly, and a large barrel attached to one end.

Also on the table is a dauntless battery, and a rework of the main weapons batteries detailed previously.

So are you making this gazebo the turret? 5mm seems a bit high for a BFG turret, I'm trying to think of idea's to give you but nothing is coming to mind as of yet for that thing without it being attached to a ship.

Another thing that may yet happen is that the walls of this will be closed up completely, the entire thing squashed significantly, and a large barrel attached to one end.

Perhaps if you removed the blue pillars that separate the arches from the base and drop the arches down. Close everything off and maybe making the top of the turret look like one of the russian domes from the cremlin. Maybe not as tall but perhaps something like that?

The main problem is keeping within the gothic aesthetic. Everything gothic is exaggeratedly tall, so it's important to convey that as far as possible even when you can't afford the height! Makes for interesting designing. The three parts of the column-arch structure are all important, though their proportion can still be changed, as well as the overall height. Th current roof design is based on crenallations, but is like more likely to be redone to be based off the arches that support it. Will keep you posted when I have something to show, as it is my girlfriend's birthday today and I won't get to do much on this!

Ok, so the gazebo gun has been rebuilt from the ground up due to major issues inherent in its design. As a result. A minor alignment issue caused major setbacks when a 90 degree angle turned out to be 90.2 and half a building had already been put on top of it... Fortunately the arch areas were not aligned to it. So here's the latest iteration of that particular design "thread" and yet to come are the two branches - enclosed-structure and central-gun.

I'm not sure how big the weapon sides for the bfg ships are as i don't own any, still waiting for my cruisers to arrive from GW. You could use these are detail for the sides, get it completed and cut it in half and just have half the gazebo as the detail on the weapon sides, or perhaps two halfs side by side with a little gap between.

These would actually work fairly well for weapon-sides, though I already have ideas for those... Option-packs, here we come!

In the meantime, the enclosed turret concept takes shape:

Sizes are actual.
