How many points of models would BOFA make in Warmaster Fantasy?
« on: October 07, 2013, 11:14:35 AM »
My club is finally getting excited about Warmaster and people might be digging out old models / armies!

One guy wants to play - but he only has the BOFA box and probably doesn't want to commit to buying any proxies / ebay models until he knows the rules.

He was asking me if there was enough in there to build an army.  I floundered and sugested the goblins might be enough for a small plain army.

Could someone work out the points perhaps who knows how many stands / units there are? :-X

I think there is about 600 points of goblins in there, and 600 points of elves if you proxy them with the human units.

Well, the closest to a real army is the goblin side. You have 8 infantry and 8 cav, along with a general, 2-3 heroes, and a shaman. At 30 points a pop you'd have 240 points of infantry. You would have to proxy 2 of those goblins as orks to make a legal O&G list though. The wolf riders don't need proxies, although there are no pure wolf units in the list. You could make the wolves (wargs?) into wolf riders and the wolf riders can proxy for boar riders.

If you take the straight goblin list (not sure of it's status as far as legality) you wouldn't have to proxy so much. Either way the points level is hovering around 1000. Not bad for learning the rules. A good chunk of my O&G and elf armies come from the BoFA box set figs.

Bofa has:

For goblin army
8x units of goblins -->        8*30 =240 pts
4x units of wolf raiders --> 4*60=240
4x units of wargs --> I use the figures like chariot proxis, so  4*80=320
1x general --> 1*80 = 80
1x shaman --> 1*30=30
2x heros --> 2*45=90

TOTAL =1000 pts

It is easy to add a giant with some 28mm figure of a troll or something
1x giant --> 1*150

But beware!! goblin army could be very fun to play, but it is very hard to win for sure. So If your mate begins with it and is one of the players who if he do not win do not like the game, could be disappointing to begin with this army.

It also have:

For wood/high elves:
2 x units of archers
2x units of spearmen
1x unit of eagles
1x command

For dwarves:
2 unit of warriors
2 commands

For humans/empire "militia":
1 unit of archers/ could be used as xcrbow
1 unit of lances/ cuold be used as halberdiers
1x mage gandalf
1x militia command

a monster bear

some ruins half a mountain and a river

Is a good base for starting an army

Thanks for your answers!

Maybe I can convince him to get some Copplestone orcs and such to add some variety.

The Copplestone range is among the best ranges there is for 10mm in my humble opinion. He could do worse. :)

I am the 'one guy' Stormwind talked off and your advice and website has certainly helped me.
Copplestone will certainly be getting some cash.

@ jchaos79 - thanks, noted, but fore the record it's more likely to make me fight harder and come up 'wit da plan!', or if completely beyond my ability buy a different army.  ::)

Fortunatley the boxed BoFA I have has no rule book, but extra sprues and so with the addition of some Baccus 6mm gobos I should be able to field a reasonable force.

I'll leaves the final comment to my as yet un-named General;  WAAGH!

Welcome Dranask!

Goblin army is very fun and when you win it is a delicious moment. Here are some tips:

- Your infantry is weak, so do not try to win with it. Use it for holding position in defended ground.

- If you have chariots (as wolves) this is your hammer, you can attack fast with them.

- Wolf raiders are not a punch force, but they have the ability of shooting so they are good for shoot and withstand charges (maybe not enough resilient to an assault of enemy heavy cavalry). If you attack with a 4 unit - brigade of them you could do a light horsemen nomadic tactic, like mongols. Attack with 2 or 3 and dispose 1 or 2 in the flanks of the enemy brigade to shoot the units that are supporting the first line. With luck you cuold confuse them or make them retreat negating their support.

- Use magic, greenskins are reknown for their waaaagh, so use it, this spell is particulary interesting. If you could maximize shamans will be good for you.

- Do not make elaborated plans before battle, because the greenskins will be unpredictable during the game due to its low command. So be prepare to change your battle plan in every turn. Sticking for a plan minded before the game, could be frustrating as your little goblins refuse to do what you had planned, and lead to disaster. Think like a little eager mean gobbo taking all the oportunities.

- Think like a gobbo, enjoy the mayhem (even if your troops are the ones who die) :)

- Do not spread your army too much, offering isolated brigades, they became easy target for the enemy.

- If you go for a horde army with lots of goblin infantry, you will have a bigger battle line. Use it.

- Remember when loosing a hand to hand assault the troops supporting can deny making way. Your fighting goblins will die, but you force the enemy to make an advance if he wants to fight. Maybe his furious attack will end with your troops around them and then starts your turn to come over him like a green tide.

- Last but not least: there are a lot of way of playing, in warmaster there is no a winning armylist configuration, so you will need to play, play and play until you discover the way you battle (more offensive, more defensive, with a horde army, with a cavalry army, with a balance army, using artillery or not... and so on)

have fun and looking forward to see some pics of your army or games!

Thanks will try to remember all that!

Fortunately as a BKC2, Hail Ceaser! and Black Powder player, the mechanics are less likely to faze me than the army.
And as always - No battle plan survives contact with dice
