[BFG] - Ork ships for 3d printing
« on: October 12, 2013, 12:14:00 PM »
Started a new little project. Also meant for printing, but this time something for the Imperials to shoot at...

It's still very WIP. Need to figure something out for the guns pointing forwards. But once ready this could function as a Kill Kroozer.

I likes it, the Shaks are close to me heart, looks like good livin space there.  Me thinking I’m gonna have to check out 3d programs, it’s got to beat cutting my fingers and killing my eyes.  At any rate I really like what you’re building there my only input might be to add so things at off angles.  Everything is horizontal or vertical and if you want to sell it to some of Da Boys you’re going to need some 45s and odd shapes as it appeals to our eyes.  Speaking of which, you mentioned you built it for something for Imperials to shoot at?  Fly in my space with yer fancy ships and we’z be using yer ships fer scrap and ridding your women folk into battle!

Now with some teeth and more stuff on it. The left side (minus front head) is almost done. The right side will get a similar threatment, but it will also be where the forward pointing weapons are mounted on.

I've beefed the teeth up slightly, added some 'wounds' to the ship's hull, and removed some of the larger shacks. I need to rethink the shacks a bit, I like the concept too much to just drop it, but after putting the model next to the human ships I made, it seems a bit odd...

Da Shacks give the ship a lot of character, like barnacles on a whale!!

That is very much the feel I'm having about the ship as well. The only problem is that they look out of scale, considering that the ship is supposed to be several kilometers long...

This is the aesthetic I always imagined would be best for Orks!  At all scales, and something sadly lost on the new 28mm Orks. =-<

Hmm....   well  then in stead of shacks those would be shanty TOWNS clinging to the side !!  Just make the "windows" less obvious ?

The roofs are indeed inspired by the old school Ork aesthetic, kinda a tribute to the old Mega Gargant.

So that each block/shack would be an entire town? Might be an idea, it's a shame I'm a bit limited by how small I can make the details...

Don't worry about the scale being wrong on such things - for me GW stuff always has the wrong scale.  The gargants and titans were always not quite right.

This thing looks pretty sweet! I would like to have some, and smaller and larger of the same style as well.

Barnacles on a whale, now you’re talking Lex!  I love the shaks, there is just something that feels Ork to me about them.  You know I had the same scale issue, and I still scratch me head and wrestle with them.  I just have to not only leave them, but build more.  After all where you gonna store all dem Grots.  When I look at the windows on the shaks it would kill the scale for me too, but then I’d imagine a race track in side, or a small hive with a great central window and it fit.  Or as Lex said think Shanty Towns.  Perhaps make less windows, so it is not so obvious.  Just wait until you see my “Munga Fish”  It has a ton of Shak Towns.  Keep going Malika you’re inspiring me to build and giving me ideas to loot!

Well, plan is to have this fellow printed, I'm very curious to see if you'd be able to convert it!  ;D

Actually in all honesty, your ships have really inspired me to look at at the Orks again. I tried building some a couple of years ago, but gave up on them.

Right on, motivating each other to keep going, to outdo, out paint or whatever is part of the beauty of this hobby.  I look at some of the masters and think “I’ll never get that good”, but you know I get a little better with every hour I spend engaged in this hobby.  If this project makes it to print I’d probably end up buying one.  I usually convert everything I touch ( “kant helps me self, da Boss makes me do it!”), but at the rate your going it may get left alone and just painted.  I think the project is coming along nicely.  I’m glad I helped give you some juice to re-visit Orks.  It’s funny I remember seeing your posts from a few years ago and found it really inspiring.  Those posts are part of the catalyst that got me building ships in the first place.  I’m curious did that project ever see paint?

Sadly enough that project died a very unglorious death. When I had to move out some friends helped me pack, my girlfriend at the time basically found two boxes, one filled with tons of other bits (insides of radios, pens, lighters, metal pieces, etc.). The other box was filled with these ships, and also my "2.0" scratchbuilding, which included a new generation of Ork ships, an Ork like warbike (proportions were totally off) and a robot.

Instead of realizing these were my projects, she just assumed they were random garbage and threw the boxes away. No wonder that relationship didn't work out!  ;D

Luckily enough my 'Nurgle-esque' titan survived. That, together with the 2.0 generation Ork ship and robot and definitely stuff I'd like to revisit again.
