Wartorn a mass fantasy combat game.
« on: February 05, 2014, 01:29:20 AM »
So i've been working on a fantasy combat game for use with microworld miniatures. I love Steve's line and have always though he needed a ruleset to go along with them. I've been power painting some armies to have a color batrep with, unfortunately i got some free time and not everything was completely painted. But i did get a batrep in, so here's the first look at Wartorn.

I played as Undead.

Core formations:
Skeletal archers
Skeletal spearmen
Skeletal warriors
Wight infantry

Veteran formations:
Skeletal mammoth
Wight Cavalry

Elite formations:
Bone giant
Wraiths

Characters:
Vampire Lord
Necromancer with 3 spells
Necromancer with 1 spell

1493 total points.

My buddy played my beastkin army.

Core formations:
2 Beastkin warriors
2 Beastkin scouts

Veteran formations:
Beastkin Chariots
Drilled Beastkin

Elite formations:
Cyclops
Minotaur clanguard

Characters:
Minotaur Lord
Shaman.

I didn't have any other character stands painted so he only had two total.

So we chose a table with some hills and tree's, and three objectives. Both the oasis are objectives and that nifty castle tower from leven miniatures in the middle is the third. Four turns total, whoever controls the majority that are uncontested at the end of the 4th turn wins.

Here is some pictures of the setup, undead is at the bottom of the pictures. Yes my wights had already made their move.

First movements complete.

Second turns movement with some spells and shooting taking place, the mammoths got hit by a boulder being thrown from the cyclops.

Skeletal spearman took some damage from a ranged attack then got charged by the beastkin warriors.

Bone giant charges the chariots, this is painful for my buddy as the chariots shine in the charge. Not being able to charge ruins their effectiveness.

End of round 2, bone giant broke and chased the chariots.

Skeletal spearmen took more losses.

Next turn looks bleak, having won most of the initiatives i got some key charges off. Bone giant flanks his drilled beastkin, while mammoths and vampire lord charge the front. It's not looking pretty for this formations. The mounted wights engage a beastkin scout formation on the right flank to contest the objective on that side.

Surprisingly the beastkin survive with a stand with full hit points, wound my vampire, and destroy a mammoth. They still lost the combat but save with their commanders leadership value. The mounted wights destroy the beastkin scouts on the other side, beating them in combat then breaking them and running them down. The left flank is building up for a massive confrontation as the two sides jockey for position.

Minotaur lord charges the vampire lord in single combat. Bone Giant charged minotaur clanguard to keep them from doing anything. Beastkin warriors charge skeletal warriors, wraiths come in for the flank on the beastkin warriors.

Mounted wights move to cover objective.

Foot wights break the beastkin warriors in the center.

King of the hill....

Mino lord, and vampire lord fight it out to 1 hitpoint each, bone giant serves his purposes and dies holding the clanguard. The beaskinwarriors on the left suffer serious casualties during the flank attack they received.

Skeletal archers get pounded by the clanguard but survive.

Vamp lord poses after dispatching the minotaur lord.

Cyclops trys to contest the objective.

Failure.

leven miniatures tower.

Overall i had a great time playing this game. My buddy had said he felt everything was really balanced it could have gone either way, there where some bad choices on his part he said, he was to timid to commit to battle and forgot about the objectives until i turned to capture one.

I have to give a shout out to Apocolyntosis, he was my first playtester and he gave me valueable feedback on the game. "it needs to be more killy", well i think i have made it more killy. At this momment i am working on getting a logo made by maddoctor, really appreciate his help on this, as i have not the skill to do it. Once i get everything squared away this rules will be made available for free, i am more then happy to send copies out to be playtest but everything is in office format at the momment.

Thanks for looking,
blind-

Thanks for sharing - nice armies!
Are they compatible with the old GW Warmaster range, size wise?

They are 6mm, but the minotaurs could be 10mm beastmen proxies.

The rules alpha is up and ready for download off the micro world games website.

Feedback is welcome, some stuff is missing I will be adding in, if you notice anything not in the game that is normally in games or is confusing please post them and I will respond.

Thanks,
