So what do you think?
« on: September 10, 2009, 04:21:24 PM »
I guess this is really directed at those that already have a copy.

So what do you think of the figures, the rules, the card sections and so on?

Here's my take:

The figures, absolutely bloody amazed. No I really am, the quality and sheer characterfulness of the figures really has knocked me for six, especially the Terminators. If I'm not careful I'm going to end up collecting a Blood Angels army for 40K as a result of these, they really are that good IMHO. I just can't wait to paint them up, but obviously as well as I possibly can, so I'll most likely start off with just the squad from mission I as that is likely to be the one that I get to play the most. Then I will probably paint maybe ten of the 'stealers...

Rules, just as good as I remember, although I've only been able to play two or three 'proper' games so far. Hopefully I'll be able to play some more next Monday, and maybe next Thursday as well. I managed to play a couple of games today whilst our eldest daughter was at nursery with a mate of mine who popped round (he's out of work at the moment). I'm really looking forward to playing through a full campaign if possible...

Card sections, well again, blown away by the quality of it all. My only gripe however is that there seemed to be an awful lot of wasted space on some of the card sections that contained large rooms. I'm sure they could easily have fitted on some more corridor or corner sections. Bit of a shame, but not really that huge an issue I guess as there's still more than enough to keep the interest up.

And that's about it really, I'm just really glad to actually have something that I can finish a game within an hour, and therefore actually get some games of something in...

The tile cards are much better than before. I wished they are created some larger sized rooms. I know not everything on a space hulk is so cramped.

I think the quality of the pieces is second to none and let's be honest the rules were pretty flawless before.

I would like to see some different floor pieces - perhaps a cargo bay like what came in deathwing along with rules for other races but those are available on the interweb.

Well I'm blown away by the quality of the miniatures, rules, floors section and everything else. I could speak all day long about how I love this realease but lets do some nitpicking just for fun of it :) I must say that I really hoped for something better to mesure time not a cheapest possible sand timer - which dosent work btw, get's stuck and measures diffrent each time :) And I felt kinda confused with too many details of on the counters. I think they should be more graphic, more simple but it's just me. Well...and ovcourse with all the hype that casued, I still loong for a 3D plastic corridors :)

I have had time to give my set a first look through....

Miniatures - Honestly, and I know that I will get shouted down for this, but the miniatures are not to my taste (and, no, I wont be selling them!). I dislike teleporting terrain with miniatures, and these figures are clearly designed to look good in the middle of a battle report photo. The three armed Genestealer bugs me (pun intended) and most of the other Stealers have gothic masonary attached. The Terminators are OK, but I cut my teeth with the old metal set Terminator box set, and so my Terminators are seriously lumbering suits. The detail is great, but the style just isnt to my taste. I have, however, bought two boxes of Genestealers and one box of Terminators, and need another box of each. So, maybe that is exactly the response that GW were looking for!  :D

Board and counters - These are very nice, and I am very impressed with these. The door steps/holders are a nice touch and the counters seem solid. I am so tempted to pick up another set of board sections.

Rules and production - This is where I think GW have excelled. I was very sceptical before details emerged about this game. I was sure that the rules would have been 'updated' and the game would be simplified further and bear almost no resemblance to first edition. I thought that the trend from first to second edition would have been continued. It took some real insight and restraint to not only use the first edition rules as the basis, but also to leave them almost untouched. For example, I still cant get my head around the 'guard' action for Terminators, why it is really need and exactly what it is supposed to represent. Also, some sensible thinking has gone on. The tracker to log action points, ammo, etc is a very nice touch, and just shows that some thought has gone in.

Timer - This deserves a sub-section of its own! I am amused by the fact that almost no-where does it say how long the timer should last. Most places in the rules just state that this is the Marine players limit. It is made worse by the fact that some people have reported that the timer runs for one period one way, and a different period when inverted. I will be replacing mine, and I am looking for a time-bomb countdown which beeps for the last ten seconds and shows a digital readout.  8)

Overall, I am very happy that I got my copy. Mainly because SH is one of the few games that I have a chance of getting 'non-gamers' to play a game of, and the production quality helps with this.

Well if you read the WD articles, somewhere in there (IIRC the production notes from Jervis) it says that they were looking for a timer that timed 'around three minutes'. I'd go with three minutes, maybe a bit more...

As I think I've already said, other than the bloody nice figures, board sections and of course game itself. My main attraction to Space Hulk at the moment is the fact that I can arrange a game or two with a  mate during the three hours that the girls are in nursery...

I love this game. I plan on playing with it 'till it turns to dust.

I noticed the lack of a definite time in the rulebook as well. I reckon it's 3 minutes, though I want to get an actual timer that will allow me to change the time limit for when I play with Blood Angels vs. Chaos Terminators from an old White Dwarf issue. The times change for that game.

Very nice quality product.......

For 60 dollars.

For what they charged I would have expected more, like an electronic timer and interactive mission status board.

Seriously, whatever happened to games like electronic battleship, those didn't break the bank in cost?

And if your arguement is for the cost of the minis that are included? They're chunks of plastic, small well shaped chunks of plastic that probably cost $ .03 each in materials to make. GW seems to be able to keep convining ppl that it's ok to pay $50 for 5 terminators. When I first playing they were 4.25 apiece, for metal, and that seemed expensive! Tomorrow the terminator box sets will be $75, then $100.

Keeping buying it, they'll keep jacking it up.

I'll shut up now, since I bought it too.
Whomever said violence wasn't a solution obviously wasn't using enough.

Just checked in 1st ed rulebook. And it's precicely 3 minutes. Minus 30 second for each killed sergant so in worst case it could be 2 minutes :)

Did the original game allow you to redraw command points if a sergeant was still alive? If not, then this is obviously the command effect modeled in 3rd ed. And lets be honest, by the time you've lost lots of sergeants you will probably have so few models left that your turns will take less than a minute, never mind three...

If memory serves, it didnt. First edition had the total time limit depending on the number of officers on the board. With the current timer, you cant add or subtract 30 seconds, and I guess that this is why the effect was changed to re-drawing command points.

Still haven't unwrapped my set - my clubmates have banned me from opening it until I've finished my Dwarf Blood Bowl team for next weekend's Spiky tournament. ::) ;)

And i must say it's a bloody good change! This rule really gives the terminators a nice boost which they really needed. Yesterday I was sure I'm in a deep s*it but thanks to redraw I had 2 x 6cp which i spended on a one guy. You should have seen my oponents face when my heavy flamer guy runned 12 fields and set flame to the techmarine genocide ,ending the mission. I love how unpredictible this game is!
