Planning the Next Campaign- Number 6
« on: February 09, 2015, 06:03:50 PM »
I have a couple of ideas for the next campaign, but I really would like your feedback before progressing further on it.  After the last two years I think I need to re-jig the campaign structure for the following reasons:

1. My time is booking up tighter and tighter each year and I don't feel like I can support the campaign as well with nice updates, fancy medals, etc.

2. The audience is slipping.  Fewer downloads, fewer participants, etc.

3. Aeronautica Imperialis is being eclipsed by other games, but especially X-wing.  Plus, time is taking its toll on the people who even know about this game's existence.

With those factors in mind, I want to re-think how we do the annual campaign.  I have a couple of ideas and would like your input.

Idea Alpha:
Here we would expand the campaign to include all games in the Warhammer Universe.  Therefore, you could score points with Epic battles, Warhammer 40K battles, Apocalypse battles, Kill Teams, Battlefleet Gothic, etc.  To accommodate this the scale of the campaign would be expanded to a sub-sector with warzones being entire planet's and not just parts of planets.  The scoring would take into accoutn the size of the battle represented on a sliding scale as well.

Pros: More potential players getting exposure to our forum/game
Cons: Less focus on AI

Idea Beta:
In this idea, I woudl create an open campaign world that would be long running and not close after a certain amoutnof time.  it would allow us to grow and evolve the backgroubnd and tie the battles together on an organic basis.  There would be small, quarterly background, rules, and aircraft updates that would tie into what is going on in the campaign.  The scale could be planetary or slightly larger, but the campaign would essentially become an open game world that would be modified by the actions of the players.

Pros: More organic with player actions impacting the overall story.  Create more community on the forums.  Players can come and go freely and play whenever.
Cons: No true end date.  Would not necessarily increase AI users on the forum.  Could be periods of inactivity.

Idea Charlie:
Create a faction specific campaign based on the players we know have a track record of participation.  The campaign would be Eldar vs. Chaos, or Chaos vs. Orks as an example.  This would allow us to focus on those of us who we know will participate and decrease the scope fo the story/add-ons for the campaign supplement.

Pros: Easier to create and pull off.  Possibly do more than 1 campaign annually.  Promote the building of a focused faction force. Focus on our existing community.
Cons: Reduces the campaign appeal.  Reduce players/downloads further.  Focus will be on our existing community.

Idea Delta:
Instead of a campaign, instead create a campaign book similar to Forgeworld books.  In this case the focus will not be on playing out the results of the campaign, but instead on the "historical" action of a campaign.  Not only will it tell the story of the camapign in a narrative/historical/fiction way, but it will include game content for recreate the conflict with sceanrios., aircraft, and special characters.  This would be similar to the Typha IV campaign in Tactica Aeronautica.

Pros: Easier to put together and could focus on a story.  Allow players to do what they want.  Possibly larger audience.
Con: Not an actual campaign that we play in.

So, let me know what you think of these ideas.  I am also open to hearing what you guys think we need to do to change it up, if anything at all. Perhaps we could mesh some fo these ideas together too.  I know I don't have all the answers.  Let me know your feedback.

I would aim for Idea Beta, with a view towards creating Idea Delta. If people know they are creating what will be a campaign book it will add interest, and they can always look back at the campaign book and replay what they see as particularly interesting or critical scenarios and games.

You can also attempt what I've done in response to a lack of local Warmaster players- try and make a simple digital version of the game. This takes a fair bit of effort, but can greatly increase your player pool (eg. I wouldn't mind playing AI, but can't where I live).

Are there more dedicated AI forums out there?

Well, the campaign starts in 3 months and I have done 0 work on it!

My Real-Life has been a bit insane lately!  Therefore, I think this campaign maybe a tad less ambitious then some of the ideas listed above.

I think the basics will be this:

In Wilderspace, past the edge of the Old Guard Stars; where the ligh of the Adtronomicon fails to shine lies the world of Ravensphal.  This world is outside Imperial reckoning yet it still exists and is a prize for the roving bands of Marauders in Wilderspace.

It was at Ravensphal where the war between Mistress Merciveax and followers clashed with the Harbingers of Chaos.  The Imperial thrust during the Furor Imperialis campaign strained the resources of the two powers in the boundaries of the Old Gurad Stars.  Immediately afterwards, it became vital to secure resources outside of Wilderspace, and the conflict spilled over into open warfare in the skies above Ravensphal.

Both sides made use of a wide array of mercenaries, allies, and followers to wage their war for control of the planet.  The prize were its dranged inhabitants of cultists and mutants and their fealty.

This campaign will feature two factions of the following:

Mistress Merciveaux:
Chaos (Any Faction)
Dark Eldar
Xeno Mercenaries
Rogue Traders
Varingyr Brotherhoods

Harbingers of Chaos
Chaos (Any Faction)
Varingyr Brotherhoods
Xeno Mercenaries
Orks

Notice that this campaign does not include Tau, Eldar, Necron, Tyranid or Imperial.

I am also thinking of putting together a couple of random aircraft into a "Xenos Mercenaries" list for this campaign.  If you have suggestions for Xenos and their Aircraft let me know.  Which xenos and which aircraft models would be helpful.

Scratch that last post.   I have changed direction back to the more traditional campaign format.  Mostly because I was able to pump out the Notables, Basic Map, and Historical Timeline in the past two days.  I suddenly have hope!

However, I am open for any new aircraft, rules or missions you might have.  So far, I have 0 ideas on that front.  :)

Feel free to add them here or PM me.

Catastrophe!

The computer I had the campaign was destroyed by a bizarre accident. I just lost 50+ pages for the campaign. I honestly don't know if I have the heart to continue.

I went to the back-up and found that it had all of 6 pages!   :o  I facepalmed myself!

I have restarted the work on the project, I'm just not sure I will have it all done in time for the usual September start date.

I did manage to save this:

Well, once I had the basic ideas down, it wasn't too hard to recreate much of the book!  I think we are on track for our normal launch dates!

Here are sample pages:

This year, it will be open to any game in the Warhammer 40K universe.  I know many of us that play AI alos play other Specialist Games and Warhammer 40K.  Now games we play for those systems can count in the campaign too.  Hopefully, we can drawn in a wider base of players AND expose them to Aeronautica Imperialis too!

Let me know what you think!
