finally got to try magic
« on: March 13, 2015, 02:25:49 AM »
one question, I have not found anything in the rule book with which spells you can chose from but I guess I just assumed if you have a "bright" wizard then you just get "bright" spells but the lord gets 6 spell cards max so with only 4 "bright" spells how does that work?  or am I missing something from the rule book

I played a 850 point game of khorne vs. empire

both sides were unlucky with a lot of misses and amazing saves at first but soon enough there was a wall of debris in front of both fleets of former war galleys and death galleys.  I finaly played and learned the ironfists who worked out really well after all of the war galleys were gone and while the wolfship's LOS was blocked.

The iron sharks were actually nearly wiped out by the gryphons but 1 crew counter remained on one of the ships, thank Khorne!  Because once the wall of debris went up the bloodship made a jump through, sunk an ironfist with a ramming attack but then was the target of everything and it seemed like everything rolled a five and he took a huge amount of critical hits and sunk.  The iron shark which was supposed to go in with it, won the initiative and saved the admiral.  It took plenty of shots but survived just fine and made it out of there!!!! very awesome indeed.

You can cast any spell in your hand, your wizard color gives you a re-roll to cast spells of that color. Page 14.

As Dave says- you get random skill cards of all sorts, you just get a benefit associated with your wizard colour.

The idea is that you have a cabal of wizards on board, your wizard colour is just the head wizard of that cabal.

How did you find the Griffons overall? On paper, flyers look extremely weak, only able to take on ships with 1 crew, or maybe 2 for an armoured flyer (otherwise they get killed on the way in).

I want to say I read that page but must not have, makes perfect sense now.  Thank you.

The gryphons as well as probably all flyers are indeed a through away, that incoming fire wounded 2 of the three.  Then one died on the boarding action, and the second died on the follow up blasts from a death galley after the boarding action BUT the third one, well, he just kept going and killed off 3 more iron shark chaos cultists.  Then the army of one kicked in for the cultists and the last man standing killed the gryphon.  I am just trying to use them as much as possible just to force myself to try and understand the rules good enough if anyone wants to play.

This game gets to be such a mess with all of the counters when you get up to 1000 point fleets!!!  LOL
To bad its so much fun to play, it always seem to end on high notes for me.  Like the admiral getting saved last night.

My brother is coming over this weekend to get away from the kids just for a couple days and we will be doing an all day warmaster campaign. going to try and use the mighty empires and man o'war fleets.  Or just do a simple scenario out of one of their magazines but either way, I will make him play man o'war for sure.

Looking forward to any reports you can give.

I'm hoping to give Man o War a go soon, but it's hard to find other players or people willing to try it.

As soon as my brother got to my house (2.5 hour drive) I started setting up a game for man o'war.  he was a little put off by the massive amount of cards and templates and counters.  I had to agree with him that it is a bit much.

We played a quick 850 point game, something small enough but still includes everything about the game.  Played on a 6x4 table, with 1 foot cutoff at each end for the templates, so a 4x4 battlefield.

Now keep in my mind, my brother actually served in the navy so he was also humoriously annoyed by some of the ship location names like forecastle etc.  but I got him on using left side and right side vs. starboard and port  :)

Being that I was teaching him the game, it was really really slow going.

I will include a few pics as a battle report in a bit.

If you just want to try the game,  go here and just print off, laminate and use a dry erase marker....I had this big elaborate thing in my head to sticky back laminate copies of the original templates onto magnets and then do the same thing for all of the original makers but I don't know how long it is going to take  LOL
