Stomm's Stuff [WM],[MH] & [WMA]
« on: September 15, 2009, 03:18:48 PM »
I thought that since I've finally taken some photos of some stuff, I may as well post them here:

So first of all, my one and only painted Mordheim model, a Reikland Captain wo occasionally stands in as a hero in my WH Empire army. Currently unbased as I hadn't decided how to base my warband when I painted him about four years ago...

Now for some Warmaster stuff:

First of all the first complete Warmaster strip I ever painted, shortly after the release of the game. I never finished the unit as IIRC it took me the best part of a month just to paint this one strip. It was only long after completing it that I realised that the wood grain made no sense going around the poles, they wouldn't have any strength at all if that were the case...

Now for the entirety of my completely painted army, well the bits of it that are painted to my 'finished' table-top standard anyway. I've got a fair few other units that are 'finished' and based, but were done so poorly due to time constraints that I fully intend to re-do them at some point. I have already done this with the unit of Knights of the Blazing Sun, I've got another to do that is very rough indeed, as well as six other units of knights of various types, and of course a fair few infantry units, artillery and so on that is partially painted. Note that some units haven't had the static grass added yet, this has more to do with not being able to remember where I've left it than anything else...:

Here are a few shots of the army from closer angles, as well as a few close up's of parts of specific units. I couldn't get satisfactory shots of the individual infantry units in line:

Crossbowmen and Halberdiers:

Flagellants:

Nuln Halberdiers:

Knights of the Blazing Sun:

And lastly from my Empire army, my Warmag featured Empire Wizard:

And now for something a little different. This is a Bret Pegasus that I've been working on rather intermittently for getting on five years now. It's actually a commission piece, so when I do finish it, hopefully before the end of the month, then it will be making its way to Canada. In the meantime it has stood in for my Hero on Griffon a couple of times at events, but largely renovating a house and now kids have got in the way of me doing any painting, hence why I haven't done any painting of note since about 2005... Well the walls and ceilings of our house don't really count I guess... ;)

I just need to figure out how to finish off the banner, the guy asked for a difficult colour combo to work with...

Edit: Just noticed that two of the MH Captain were identical, the rear view was missing...

Lovely stuff.  I suppose that answers the question about how Nuln Halberdiers might look.

It does to an extent, but as I've mentioned elsewhere they were painted slowly and steadily, but then the details at the end were literally rushed through at the last minute. If I hadn't done this I would most likely have painted the feathers white (possibly with dark blue or red detail), and the red would not have been quite so garish as it would have been worked up through the reds, rather than straight blood red. A shame really, as I had been painting them to the same standard as the Averlanders, just cutting out the yellow to save time...

Well, and then there's the problem that it gives very little sense of how _my_ Nuln halberdiers might look: "good from far, but far from good" is far more likely with me.

To be honest, I think that certainly for armies like the Empire and High Elves, the important thing when painting them is that you keep the painting crisp and clean. The number of shades, washes, highlights and so on doesn't really matter too much so long as the end result is pretty bright, indeed overly-bright, as subtle colour treatments don't really show up that well in my experience. And certainly the seven or eight stages that I went through for the yellow on the Averlanders is pretty much lost as soon as you are more than maybe ten centimetres away from the model.

For example, the reds on all of my Reikland units were done either: Black undercoat, scab red, blood red. Or in some cases just a thinned down blood red over the black undercoat so that it still shows through, and then a thicker coat on top of that. IIRC that is how I did the red banners, cloaks etc... on the KotBS...

So, if and when I do 'properly' paint a Nuln brigade or two for my army, I will most likely treat the black first to a pretty heavy shadow grey drybrush, then several layers of the new black wash thingy (it seems much thinner than the old black ink, but I prefer the matt finish as it makes it easier to work on later). Pick out the flesh areas in Tallarn Flesh, highlight with Elf Flesh, largely just noses and fingers. Sort out the hair, and pick out most of the details in white or a bone colour, with red as a nice contrast for feathers, ribbons, etc...

Needless to say I tend to spend far more time thinking about painting than actually painting.... :-\

Your imperials are beautiful.

Why thankyou, they'd be even more beautiful if there were twice as many finished as there are. I can just about field a 1750pt army without having to put anything that's jsut undercoated or bare metal onto the table. But the overall look of the army is very shabby due to the mix of rush-painted (as in 1/2 an hour in my hotel room after a heavy drinking session the night before a tournie), and part-painted units. That is why I am slowly plugging away at trying to finish off two more units of Crossbows a unit of Halberdiers and a pair of mortars so that I've got my 2k mins sorted (IMHO cannons are an 'unofficial minimum' for any Empire army worthy of the name...), then I can revisit the rest of my knights, and maybe start on my Steam Tank to pad my 'fully painted points' back up to 2k before diving into a 2nd unit of Flagellants (I currently sub a unit of black undercoated bears as Flagellants), and then some more infantry...

Now if only the girls weren't a bit under the weather these last two nights, waking up and depriving us of sleep I might have got some painting done tonight. Instead the youngest was sick all over me, which did at least help illustrate how little she chews her food...

As I see, you're also doing very well on 28mm miniatures - I very like your Mordheim guy ... the blacklining fits great ;) (even if there are a few things I don't like that much about that mini ;))

Ofc. also great job on the warmaster empire :)

Great work.
I love the colours on the pegasus knight.

Cheers, not sure about the banner though. I might re-cover it in black and start from scratch again. The green really doesn't contrast well with the red and blue, so I might replace the gold edging and then use yellow as a seperator colour and try to replicate the fleur-de-leis (sp?) that is found on the shield. If I'm really feeling adventurous I may even try some metalic scroll-work within the solid red, blue and green areas...

Well I would put up photos of my 40k and WH figures, but well they're not SG-related now are they? BTW the MH Captain doesn't have any blacklining on him, it's all just achieved by leaving the black undercoat showing through in some places, especially between different coloured areas...

Ofc. also great job on the warmaster empire :)

Cheers, it was actually your Halberdiers that urged me to get some photos up. My army has been seen by many at events, and has even partially been in print in an issue of Warmag. But when I originally painted them the only way of getting pictures up online was through the use of a scanner, so I've never really tried taking any proper photos myself.

I'll see if I can take a photo of the Norse guy that I sculpted for Project Norse, I've still got the bits of him and at least one casting laying around somewhere. Unfortunately the one and only one that I painted seems to have gone missing at an event a couple of years ago, he probably just failed to be put back into my figure case when I packed up...

That's one brilliant WM army!

very well done! :)

cheers,

Thanks, much appreciated.

Yep but the blacklining effect stays the same ;)
