Pursuit - maximum distance
« on: September 03, 2015, 12:08:19 PM »
Hi guys,

Does maximum movement distance (from the Movement Chart in the Movement section of rules) affect pursuits?
The rules in the Pursuit section say: "The distance the pursuers are allowed to move is not fixed – it will vary depending on the distance retreated by the enemy."

It can easily happen in multiple combats.
Let's say that a unit from the right flank of the combat is not able to pursuit the unit it was in contact with in the previous round of combat. The only edge still accessible is on the opposite side of the whole combat.
In order to get there, the unit would need to move forward than it's maximum movement distance (20cm for an infantry or monster).

Can the unit make the move (pursue), assuming that there is a clear path?
Under normal circumstances (such as described above), I would say yes. However, the same could also apply to some pretty ridiculous situations, such as cavalry riding around a big terrain feature (forest), traveling enormous distance (could easily be 50 cm). For such, I would just apply common sense.

What do you think about this?

As written, ya the cav would be allowed to do that. No one in our group has ever tried it though, rather we treat pursuits as a mini-charge. If a unit that can pursue can no longer see the enemy it needs to pursue then it can't.

That's not really to the letter of the rule, but it works for us and it seems to adhere to the spirit of the rule to me.

Well, the rules explicitly say that you don't need to see the unit as long as there is a clear path.
To me personally, applying the maximum distance fits better.

Thanks for the opinion.

How do the rest of you play it guys?

We go with the basic rules too, no limit on the distance. While it does sometimes result in seemingly insane moves around terrain/troops we rationalise it as actually just representing a vast moving melee where troops have instead fought through the enemy line to end up behind them.
