hero quest mini's
« on: September 18, 2015, 08:27:14 PM »
which figures work best for heroquest?  its a massive question to someone who hasn't grown up with games workshop games as I have no idea on all the ranges and collections they have actually put out.  Mordheim to me seems like a good pick but I am probably wrong.

For the heroes, Mordheim is a good choice.  There are plenty of models from that game which would make good quality characters for anyone playing the heroes.

For the monsters, models from Age of Sigar (formerly Warhammer Fantasy) are the best choice in my view.  The trouble is, as always, they don't come cheap.  A better bet may be to look for some suitable undead, orcs, and chaos models from sellers on e-bay, because you don't have to use models from the current range for Heroquest monsters, you can choose any models that you think look good.

You can also consider other companies who produce suitable monsters.  Mantic's undead range, for example, has some models which may be useful for Heroquest.

Modern Warhammer figures have suffered due to scale creep and look huuuge in comparison to ones from the early 1990s!

It might be good to look for older metals from that era on eBay.

man, busy weekend.  I had my three year old's birthday party this weekend and we had some visitor's all weekend included my nephew who has turned into a bit of a terror when it comes to these game pieces so I have kept it on the shelf unfortunately.

yeah I would have to agree with the scale creep as I have now seen a few youtube videos of the models I was thinking about from warhammer/mordheim and they all seem to reach out over other squares and in a room full of them it might get messy.  I was just looking for models to replace my heroes on the board, not the monsters.

I am fixating on the old ral-partha models.  The 7 models I got will be able to play empire perfectly and be done with that race.  I am also only going to do this for the four races that me and my brother have so I need dwarf, chaos and high elves still.  The dwarves and elves of that era are really easy to come by on ebay but the chaos models are all the most expensive ones.  Actually all I can look up are "evil" ral partha models and then they can be painted to look like chaos.

Other than those additional models I am not looking to modify the board game at all and too keep the current models.  Otherwise I see this getting mucho mucho expensive when it doesn't need to be.

The weapons that heroes can purchase throughout the quests will give warmaster heroes an additional +1 or +2 during their combat bonus' and certain quests will add a +1 to an individual's commands with a maximum of +2.  AND, the campaign game I am playing has a chart to roll against for wounded heroes so I think I will use that for when your heroes "die" during the quest but still complete the quests.  I might still put a "critical" body point range for each character to make it more likely to be "wounded" if it is indeed too easy for a hero to live through a quest, but for right now, a hero has died in each of the 2 quests.  These quests have been by me playing by myself and my wife just to speed through only to see if anyone dies.

My wife still just doesn't really understand the game so she gets bored easily  LOL
She hasnt played any of these games at all in her life so its just fun to coax her into it.  :)

Plus, I believe the ral partha's are 25mm scale and the warhammer is 28mm scale (am I wrong, its from memory) and sitting side by side the ral parthas I have look the same as the board's plastic pieces, will post a pic tomorrow night just for a perspective.

for 5 points guess which one is what game  :P

that is the only warhammer fantasy model I have as I bought him a long time ago to really do a good job of painting on  :)  when I was 17 years old and using a good drybrush technique.

oh, and a third game in tonight.  talisman of lore.

warrior almost died twice but saved by magic and the elf then taken down to 1 body point and just plain got lucky as he saved against a would be killing hit with the very last skeleton on the quest!  LOL

I'm thinking if I limit the magic a bit so healing isn't so easy a hero would die on each quest.

Even without healing, heroes really ought not to die at all in quests in the basic game book.  It's all a matter of strategy.  As long as all the heroes stick together and don't go off exploring on their own it's very difficult for any of them to die.

This is especially true once any of them purchases a ranged weapon or a weapon which can attack diagonally.

That is something I have not played with yet, no upgrades.

The diagonal attacks would make things a lot easier for the heroes.  I will need to make all the upgrades possible and then play again a couple of times.

If this game doesn't work out for the campaign at least I know my 2 boys will love it one day.

Oh yes, it's a great game for older children.  It was the first game I played, and I was about nine at the time I think.

I am sure that it's going to work for the campaign though :).  You're putting a lot of thought into it, and it sounds like you're you're enjoying it, which are both very positive signs.
