another Warmonger commission
« on: December 07, 2015, 08:07:33 PM »
Warmonger is slightly in the black this year. Rather than pay taxes on it come next April, I decided to commission part of the next unit instead. Bob's going to be sculpting three Halberdier strips for me this month. Pics as I have them.

I'm hoping for a few more sales between now and next April so I can cover the rest of the unit before I do a KS for them. If that doesn't happen I'll either delay the KS or risk trying for a higher goal.

Would you consider pre orders for the halberdeirs to get them to a KS sooner? How much do you need to sell to get them out sooner?

Pre-orders are an option. Given what still needs to be sculpted (the biggest expense) I'd need 1,900 USD with a KS (roughly 210 units). Taking pre-orders instead of a KS I'd be able to do it at 90% of that (1,710 and 190 units).

PayPal allows for pre-orders, I just haven't investigated how to go about them. In a nut shell, someone pays and it gets put into a holding area. I get to withdraw it from that area the day before I ship. What happens if someone cancels their payment or I have to refund it, I'm not sure. I don't think there's much risk for the buyer, but I could be left holding miniatures that people backed out on. Not the worst problem for me, but I try to stay lean and liquid by keeping inventory low. There's also the problem of I get 50% of the cash I need, what then? Can I refund it all without penalty?

Of course, all that's if we do it on the up-and-up with PayPal. If someone were to send me a gift, with the understanding that I'd send them a gift of miniatures sometime in the next 6 months, that would be something to talk about.

All that being said though, every dollar I make selling the products I have goes towards getting the next one sculpted or some form of business overhead. So if you want them sooner, pimping them across the internet and to friends helps just as much.

Another thought on pre-orders is to use Celery. I still get hit with fees, but it's 2% and PayPal's 2.9% + $0.30 instead of Kickstarter's 10%.

The trade off there is the marketing (I'd be responsible for driving all sales to it, KS wouldn't be helping) and it's not well known like KS (so people might be put off). Is the 5% extra I'm paying KS worth that?

That's kind of what I did when contributing to the Skeleton project.

Very exciting news!  If I don't get any Warmonger miniatures for Christmas, I will be buying some soon after.  Keep up the good work, and thank you!

This sounds great, I guess they'll look closer to the Elite Halberdiers than the strip ones, or closer to the Pikemen you've already done, in that sense.

I know this might not be an immediate thought but any ponderings  about some mercenaries.? e.g. Halflings  archers or militia or similar?

The odder stuff I'll likely stay away from. In order to recoupe costs and pay for another unit I need to sell at least 225 packs. AfterRthese the cav, arty and characters are next.
