Warmaster Warmer

So who is thinking of going to this at WHW in Nottingham, January 2010?
What do you all think to adding the new lists to the ones available for selection?

Well I think will be good to inclued the new lists. But I am afraid I'm not going, so my opinion could be not so important.

you should upload pics when the event has done  ;)

I'm hoping to go. It all depends on my speed of painting and transport. Any idea when entries need to be in? I'm also hoping to drag a friend along (or rather than he'll drive us there). If he can't get his army painted I'm assuming that he'd not be able to play?

I'd love to go, but the only army I'm likely to have anywhere near finished is Dogs Of War.

I don't think anyone would object, but I'm still waiting to hear from the organiser.

The other, possibly more important, objection is that my army is almost exclusively non-GW figures. I've also asked if this would be a problem at Warhammer World, but again, have still not had an answer.

Cheers, Martyn

Firstly on the unpainted army front, I don't think that I have ever fielded a completely finished, based and fully painted army at an event, hence my 'Black Legion' EIR army. You see a sense of humour and a penchant for puns is a prerequisite for a wargamer IMHO... ;)

As to non-GW figures. Well that's a tough one, I don't know what the general policy on that is in WHW, as effectively its just Tom booking a load of tables for him and his mates, the mates of course being us... When I ran the Euro GT they had a 'you're paying, so its up to you' approach, but these sort of things do have a habit of changing pretty frequently... It's probably best to ask Tom directly...

As to additional lists, err... Just make sure that you explain everything before playing, and where possible publicise the fact that you're going to be bringing a 'non-standard' list prior to the event. I've taken playtest Norse lists to use at events before, which does of course give your opponent a handy excuse when you beat them ;) Also bring plenty of print outs with you, I know for a fact that I won't have the time to fully read through every variant list that is out there now, heck I was even caught out by the latest 'official' Lizardmen list at the August get together at the Civil Service Club in London, which was also a pleasant one day affair.

So, onto more important matters. Is anyone considering staying in Nottingham the night before or the night after? Admittedly I can probably blag a bed in a spare room of a family friend, so won't necessarily have to fork out for a hotel room. But there are some very good pubs worth visiting in Nottingham, and for that matter a few good places to get a curry. And I for one more than welcome the opportunity to spend an evening getting sozzled and talking about toy soldiers, etc...

In regards the non-gw models, do you actually think the staff will understand/recognise the actual warmaster models as GW models ? :p

I would of course await confirmation from Tom, but hopefully it won't be a problem.

As for staying in Nottingham, I will be travelling down on the day.

Can anyone give me (and everyone else) a sense of the power-level of this tournament? In other words, do people tend to take maxed out lists and play largely for the win or is this a relaxed affair?

I'm asking because I'm hoping to go and don't want:
(a) to rock up with a nice fluffy army and spend the day getting spanked.
(b) to turn up with a nasty knight-heavy Empire list only to find out that I'm the one player who has taken things too seriously.

I expect either way I'll lose most of my games as I'm very much a beginner (4 games so far...) so this might not matter much anyway!

@pw - I view it as this, it is a fun free day out playing a game I am very passionate about.
I had to miss last year due to illness, but the year before was my first ever tournament (at wargaming) and my first time playing WM other than against 2 other people.
So I was very nervous (do I know the rules? will it be ultra competitive?), I messed about with a HE list for weeks and then practiced as hard as I could playing my chosen list repeatedly against my nephew (who also attended playing empire).
But all this worrying was for naught, it was a very friendly and relaxed affair, with everyone helping each other out and discussing rule vagaries in a very mature manner.
We both had a great day and I didn't meet anyone who took it too seriously, everyone was very friendly.
My HE army wasn't too cheesy i.e. I didn't take the maximum amount of cav & chariots and I did reasonably well (3rd if I recall).

SO in conclusion, pick an army you enjoy playing and then ask yourself are you going there to WIN or to have a great time.
You can do both and it is after all a dice game so an 'uber' list may still get kicked around the table :)

I saw Tom at Derby Worlds this weekend and he has responded on yahoo forum in regards the new lists.
I quote
'I'm not too up to speed with the trial lists and stuff at the moment, but in the
past I've always said that folks could use any of the lists from the old Warmags
(including the Christmas list - though no-one ever took me up on that). So if
the Trial lists are the new equivalent of those (and I guess they are) then go
right ahead.
The only thing I'd ask is if you are planning to use one of those thenplease let
me know so I can make sure the other players know so they can at least have a
look at the list beforehand and mot get too many surprises on the day.
Tom'

So this looks promising for using the new lists.

Well I always try to play to win, but often spend far too much chance talking rubbish mid-game to have a chance of doing anything meaningful.  So, many people take their games seriously, but all are still taken in a light-hearted manner. I certainly at least hope that my incessant waffling and light hearted banter, or more usually moaning about lack of sleep, a hangover or all of the above does at least partially compensate for me fielding as many knights as I can cram into the army. However with the WW format it is very hard to pick a trule effective Empire army, what with 1700pts but 2k min/max...
