FFG: A New Path Forward
« on: September 09, 2016, 08:15:13 PM »
If you're interested in any FFG games based of GW IP now's the time to get them:

A New Path Forward - Fantasy Flight Games and Games Workshop Conclude Their Business Relationship
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/…/9/9/a-new-path-forward/

Quote
In 2008, Fantasy Flight Games first began publishing great games set in the amazing Games Workshop universes. From the earliest days of the partnership, Games Workshop played a key role in the Fantasy Flight Games library, helping us further develop roleplaying games like Dark Heresy and Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, while creating and establishing new board games like Chaos in the Old World and Forbidden Stars, and Living Card Games® such as Warhammer 40,000: Conquest and Warhammer: Invasion.

Games Workshop has been a fantastic partner for the past eight years, and we’re thrilled that we had the opportunity to work together and bring so many new and exciting games into the world. As much as we have enjoyed creating these games, our current licensing term is coming to an end.

Beginning February 28th, 2017, Fantasy Flight Games will no longer offer for sale any games in conjunction with Games Workshop, including Talisman and all games taking place in the Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 universes.

We’re extremely grateful to our friends at Games Workshop for giving us the opportunity to play in the worlds that they created, and we wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavors.

For more details, please keep reading in the FAQ below.

What is the timeframe for the conclusion of the business relationship?

All upcoming products for Games Workshop-licensed games have already been announced and will be released in upcoming months. All Games Workshop-licensed product lines will leave the Fantasy Flight Games catalog on February 28th, 2017.

What does this mean for Fantasy Flight Games products created from Games Workshop properties?

As stated above, after February 28th, 2017, product lines dealing with Games Workshop properties will end and will no longer be offered for sale by Fantasy Flight Games.

All upcoming products for these product lines have already been announced—there will be no new announcements of additional Games Workshop-licensed products. All announced, currently unreleased products will be released before the conclusion of the business relationship between Fantasy Flight Games and Games Workshop.

The full list of product lines leaving the Fantasy Flight Games catalog is:

• Black Crusade
• Blood Bowl: Team Manager
• Chaos in the Old World
• Chaos Marauders
• Dark Heresy
• Dark Heresy Second Edition
• Deathwatch
• Forbidden Stars
• Fury of Dracula
• Only War
• Relic
• Rogue Trader
• Space Hulk: Death Angel
• Talisman
• Warhammer: Diskwars
• Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay
• Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game
• Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game
• Warhammer 40,000: Conquest
• All Fantasy Flight Supply products showing imagery licensed to Games Workshop

What does this mean for Warhammer 40,000: Conquest Organized Play?

Organized Play support for Warhammer 40,000: Conquest will conclude this year at the Fantasy Flight Games World Championships. After the 2016 World Championships, there will be no Organized Play support for Warhammer 40,000: Conquest.

Retailers: All pre-orders for Warhammer 40,000: Conquest Store Championship Kits and Quarter 1 Tournament Kits have been canceled. These kits have been discontinued and will not be released. Retailers will not be charged for these kits.

That's disappointing news.  Some of these RPG collaborations were rather good, especially from a narrative point of view.

Too bad. Lot of good stuff in the line up. Hope GW licenses some of it to another publisher or brings it to market themselves.

the Rogue Trader RP was especially well done setting fluff and background. I'm absolutely certain that the ROI on them and their partnership is tiny in comparison to their licence with Disney for Star Wars. I'll bring a beer in their memory

Maybe GW were mad at how popular X-Wing is now for all the casual gamers in their 20s-30s they lost?

I always thought Diskwars was an interesting thing - FFG doing their best to Not Actually Make Tabletop Warhammer but kind of doing it anyway.

Seriously, though, I think it's due to GW firing up SG again, they want all the money that might go on spin off games going to /their/ spin off games.

FFG is coming out with their own rune wars miniature games, plus GW is getting back into specialist games and hopefully more stand alone games. They both may see each other has more serious competition than before. Still a bummer though. Through FFG the Old world was still alive, now we don't even have that. I am especially sad that we won't be seeing any expansions to warhammer quest the card game. I highly recommend it.

Also I think it speak to the kind of companies they are, when FFG just straight up announces it, and GW just pretends nothing happened at all.

FFG did benefit a lot from the GW deal. It made the name really well known. But now they are bigger and have a Star Wars license... :)

Glad to have helped on Rogue Trader: Battlefleet Koronus (it has my name in it  8) ).

A sad announcement for us fans! Another excellent batch of games goes by the wayside of history....

I think the decision to not continue the licence probably comes from both sides; to me, Fantasy Flight Games seems to have been moving in this direction for a while with the list of games and IPs they have. With Specialist Games returning and several solid electronic licences out there, perhaps GW also thought it was time to close a happy chapter and move on to new pastures?

Also, I think FFG making the announcement rather than GW is pretty normal; they're FFG products that are being discontinued, GW didn't have any hand in their production. It would be kind of nice to make some celebratory statement though, FFG has enriched the GW universe as much as it has enriched FFG!

The future shall be interesting: with IPs like Star Wars potentially getting table top game exposure from FFG, WH40K might no longer be the closest you can get to table top Star Wars miniature battles—without stable, competent support of the rest of the background by FFG, will GW and the 40K IP be able to survive? Maybe we'll be lucky, and GW will start doing things better again....

I've read @horizon's name in that Rogue Trader book, too! He's famous B-)

Sid Meier's Pirates always seemed like it could translate to 40K well... maybe it's time to actually play some RT RP! :P

Anyway, some food for thought,
Thinking Stone
