If you are furious enough and use enough layers of it, drybrushing can really look like a good airbrushing! =D

indeed. but the best thing is choosing the right colours for the job. many people neglect drybrushing the same colour as the basecoat over a washed finish. instead opting for the next colour up in the process. layering, as you say. basecoat colour. wash. drybrush same as basecoat. then keep lightening the basecoat and be less and less vigourous as you work your way lighter. it works well in the end but especially on browns and other muted warm colours like dark red or orange... its all in the wash really... devlan mud has been extinct for some time now but for emperors sake dont just substitute with agrax. it wont work. you need to use an alternative.
vaaish suggests Army Painter Strong tones. he says its a dead ringer. as yet I've not used this but vaaish is a steely-eyed seasoned painting veteran you can take what he says to the bank as far as I'm concerned. ;D
at present I'm using  one of the new agrax earthshade tubs (the larger ones: 24ml) and add in: 2.5ml of nuln oil.
(flat not shiny!!!)
its not 100% devlan mud buts its as close as I could get it. and it looks ok on what I'm doing for now. will invest in that armypainter stuff when this runs out...

the Righteous Infliction is here... (these pics are bit poor quality. taken indoors as its raining. I'll get better pics soon. once the sun comes out again!)

yep a voss retribution class...

yes I know she has a nova cannon not torpedoes but I field her as such and swap out torpedoes for nova at no extra cost and why not eh?  its more than a fair trade for the opponent. strength six torpedoes swapped out for a single novacannon..?

I had been after one of these voss battleships for what seemed like forever and a friend of mine ditched his entire collection and donated this (and many more) ships to me.
I couldn't believe my luck, I had coveted this ship  since he bought it! and back then funds were even worse than they are for me now! so I knew i never had a chance to own one.
anyway, bit of stripping of paint and some re-jigging here and there the Righteous Infliction was re-born*

why not simply do an apocalypse class? well to be honest; style. pure and simple. not to blow my own trumpet, but this conversion has everything I have ever loved about bfg stylistically; massed weapon batteries, arches, buttresses, voss prow, church for a bridge section, eagles, golden winged angel, chunky-assed-engines with horizontal protection plates and the ability to purge a planet from orbit with a single broadside volley!  To be honest battleships aren't really my style but the retribution is faster, gunnier and blunter in tactics than all the other battleship classes. to my eyes its pretty much an over-amped overlord class isn't it? :D

classifications aside this ship is the perfect centrepeice to my ever growing armageddon sector battlefleet and was a fun conversion and painting challenge.

that being said, conversion was bare minimum. its pretty simple, for those not in the know the weapons batteries are helian and the bridge is off of the planet killer. but, who am I kidding, you knew all that already didn't you... ;)

*I say re-born as my first retribution class had the same name and was in gothic colours. in my fluff, the Righteous Infliction suffered terrible damage after fleet engagement with the dark chaos lord henreticus (the same buddy who donated his fleet(s) to my cause ;) ) after limping her way to the Armageddon sector she was re fitted with reclaimed weapon systems and a new voss prow. hence the nova cannon...
what a fine excuse not to convert that voss prow eh?

Great use of bits, the ship really looks very beefy, just uber majestic!

Looks fantastic mate. The bridge works wonderfully.

The mechanicum retribution can take a Nova Cannon for +10pts I think. Seems like you should just use that as a guide ;)

A very nice and simple conversion. sometimes the simple ones are the best  :)
I replaced the prow eagles head with a wolf head from the space wolves thunder hammer to the Wolf of Centralia which is my flagship for the Cantrallian system defence fleet  ;D

Rightio, I shall be able to get one up tomorrow providing I have it saved to the laptop.  Other wise it could be a while until I'm back home...

No offence but the wolf head is a little crooked. Should be pointed down a little more... Nice idea though. Have used the  old marneus calgar backpack eagle before but overlooked the space wolf one...

I'd replace the back mounted eagle with a wolf like icon as well!

To be honest it is the photo, It was one of the things I focused on when placing it was that it level both horizontally and in line with the rest if the ships form from above.

I never thought about the rear eagle haha. May be time for me to find something suitable... dives in bits box...

WIP! systemship sized fuel transport conversion
« Reply #57 on: June 12, 2017, 12:26:11 PM »
ok, Malika actually asked for a wip shot of the other one of these I made ages ago but at the time I did not have one.
I just decided to make a new one for my merchant/transport fleet; 'Yellowline trucking',  as such I have a wip to show you...

so to break it down. its a meltabomb. bit of sprue as the prow (dome is a blob of tacky glue) plasticard fin with the lugs off of an imperial tank track as engines and a cut down aerial as the main engine/bridge. copper roofing nail as base.
easy parts to get hold of and as such easy to replicate, so have fun making bubba fuel transports!
it works pretty good as a system-ship sized fuel transport as far as I can see...

*EDIT*
did a couple more and took a shot:

see if you can recognize all the bitz!

Oooh, those are awesome! What are the dimensions more or less of these? I'm pondering about making a sprue of system ships, but don't really know what size they should be.

Thanks. As for scale. The front one is a meltabomb so I'd say 15 to 20 mm is about right... That's more or less the sizes of the gw ones that came with the metal defence monitor model...
