Steam Tank rules
« on: October 18, 2009, 03:14:39 PM »
There are two different rules and stats for the steam tank (WM rulebook and WM Armies supplement). Also there are changes in the Hellblaster.

Do the WM Armies rules replace officially the WM rulebook ones?

What were the reasons for the changes?

Thanks!

WM Army supplement (V2.2) supercedes the originaly published lists.

Changes where made to meet some inconsistencies, to allow for the added armies on top of the original 6 and to cater to some extend for community demands.

It still doesn't make it a useable unit. IMNSHO really it needs to basically be akin to a Bone Giant with a shooting attack, or possibly even give it the stats of the Sphynx might be more appropriate (obviously with a shooting attack of some kind), then use the 'wounded' status to fit in with the 'it's all gone pear shaped' table. That would make it a much more useful, charcterful and better modelled unit entry in the Empire army list. In essence it's still far too underpowered and far too overpriced to be worth taking in place of a unit of knights and 20pts elsewhere...

what does IMNSHO  means??   sometimes I find very hard to understand the acronyms.

Anyway, steam tanks....  We have two models of steam tank, and we like both rules of the tank (the old WM rulebook and the 2.2 version) so in our homemade/friendly sessions of games we are going to use both stat to different models. If someone has homemade another set of rules could be nice to share it, and then we could introduce a third steam tank  :P  I love the idea of only exist 8 steam tanks and they are different each other.... why not different stats?

Also, I do not paint yet my second steam tank (possibly the one who use the rules 2.2) and I would like to convert or change something to look different than the WM standar steam tank. And I have zero ideas. Could you give some?

I am also considering convert one with Pendraken dwarf warwagon or with the chasis of WWII soviet artillery propulsed with some 100 years war cannon

IMNSHO = In My Not So Humble Opinion

On Steamtank conversions - A friend of mine once made 4 or 5 different types of Steamtanks, all based on the basic ST chasis.  He never used more than one of them in a game - he just liked building them.  The one that stands out most in my mind was one with an armored fighting platform on top of the tank instaed of the turret.  He had this thing full of all kinds of troops, rather like the howdah on the Stegadon (which didn't exist yet back then).  It was very well done, as were the others, and really looked great.  He also had an assault gun (StuG III) version.  Giving a ST a Helblaster instead of a cannon might be fun, too.

Thanks for the ideas CtYankee!. are there chances to see any pics?

Other question: is the steam tank able to shoot to fortress walls, etc (siege rules) with this change of the damage rules? (Now 3 shooting dices reducing armor vs former 2 dices+ bounce no armor saving)

It seems now the caliber of the ammo is reduced, and useless against a wall.

Probably yes.
It's not definitely decided but as the new steam tank does not ignore armour totally anymore but only gives a -1 it seems quite logical that it won't destroy fortifications.

The ST ought to be able to be used as a battering ram though...

Would love to see some pics if possible, the ST is one of my favourite models and it is a pity it always does so badly in actual battle.
So any excuse for building up some more would be great :)
Is there not a GW WFB link that lists the different types? I seem to recall an article on the matter.

Unfortunately, I have no pictures of any of the ST conversions.  I lost track of my gaming buddy in 2001 when I moved to California (and then,.......elsewhere) and he moved to Iceland (yes, Iceland).

However, here is a website that has a nice discussion on ST history as well as some great pictures.

I've always fancied sculpting a ST model based on the new WH version(s). Likewise I've always thought that it would be nice to have several weapon fits available, so having the cannon as a speperate piece, with a hellblaster as an alternative. Indeed having the option of no cannon at all, and of course the open mortar variant and fighting platform one would be nice as well.

Maybe I'll have a go in the New Year before I start work on gearing up my sculpting skills for other projects. I'm sure that a machine will be easier to sculpt than individual figures, etc...
