Chariot and Monster mounts for characters
« on: October 28, 2016, 05:24:19 PM »
Dear community,

I have always played the rule for Chariot and Monster Mounts, that characters may take, to mean that the stated combat attack bonus is added when the character joints a unit, for example +1 for a chariot mount, or +3 for a Dragon mount. This bonus is added to the character's base attack bonus value (if any).

However some players have argued that such mounts should offer the additional +1 for charging enemy in the open bonus to the character's attacks.

I have always argued against this, for two reasons,

1) It is not explicitly stated in the character rules that characters mounts receive the bonus attack for chariots or monsters charging in the open.

2) Characters do not charge as such, only units do.

However, I am struggling to find the rule in the book to support my argument.
Am I correct?

The best I can find is the reference to Chariot and Monster mounts on pg 63 of the online rules, and this states that "Chariot and Monster mount bonuses are added to the character's normal combat bonus."
This is not overly helpful as it could be interpreted either way.

Additionally, I can't find the rule that specifies how many stands in a unit that a character joins benefit from any Terror effect they may have. If a Dragon riding Hero joins a unit of three stands do all stands benefit from his terror? That would mean all enemy stands in contact with the unit would suffer terror.

Or must you pick one stand and apply the Terror to one enemy stand they are fighting.

Advice and comments welcome.

The +1 bonus is applied to monster/chariot stands (p41). A character with a monster or chariot upgrade is still a character stand, so they don't get an additional +1 bonus. Once more, they're referred to as "Monstrous Mounts" and "Chariot Mounts" in the rules. It doesn't give a +1 bonus to these either, just monster stands and chariot stands.

When a character joins a unit it is considered part of that unit. Units cause terror, not stands. All of the stands in the unit would benefit from the character's special rules (like Terror). The selector might mention it as well, the Undead one says "a unit that has been joined by a Dragon riding character causes terror in its enemies."

I agree as well.  I use a dragon in my chaos army sometimes.

Just make sure your friends know that your characters are NOT charging.....they are joining a unit which has ALREADY charged.  Characters are not allowed to charge per the rules just like they cannot be charged.
