Official Hired Swords
« on: October 26, 2009, 03:30:10 AM »
The Mordheim Errata document available on the GW website lists the following as the official Hired Swords.

  • All the ones in the printed rulebook
  • Imperial Assassin from the 2002 Annual
  • Tilean Marksman from the 2002 Annual
  • Beasthunter from Empire In Flames
  • Highwayman from Empire In Flames
  • Roadwarden from Empire In Flames
  • The Merchant from Town Cryer 22

However, for some reason I have treated other Hired Swords as official also (e.g. Elf Mage, Kislev Ranger, etc) and those Hired Swords have been given the "1a" rating on the Watchtower on TBMF which implies that they are official (http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/mordheim-resources-f20/reference-the-watchtower-mordheim-rules-index-t816.htm).

I'm now confused. Is the list from the Mordheim Errata that I have copied above correct or is it now out-of-date?

Thanks!

Wow! Well, the 1a rating is definately my fault then. I have always assumed that Nick's Hired Swords from Fanatic Magazine were official. They even released miniatures for them. But you right: the Rules Review is the state of the art source for "officialness" and they're not in there...

Andy? Can they get a level up with the FAQ?

Thanks Cianty. I was very confused.

Yeah you are right that it is odd that there have been miniatures created for those hired swords even though they are not actually official. I wonder whether future rules reviews could make some more hired swords official (e.g. these ones, Wolf Priest of Ulric, etc). Nudge, nudge, wink, wink Da Bank. :D

Remaining hired swords from Fanatic Online got a rating of 3 on the Watchtower so I didn't bother to include any of them.

Which is due to an often mixed reception by the community. They would each have to be reviewed individually.

@Lemming: Yes, good list.

Ideally, hired swords should only be used in those settings that they were created in. This is not in the rules or listed in any FAQ but a Khemri Hired Sword really doesn't have a place in Mordheim, unless you allowed a Khemri warband but when you do things arise due to them being unofficial.

The list noted in the Watchtower is not official (sorry Cianty). ;) It must be noted in a Rules Review for that to happen. Of which we are slowly working on one but we are working on it. A few things have been answered but there is plenty more to work on.

The official listings have always been in the last Rules Review and the one Merchant is a sore spot on trying to figure out what to do with him as really, new skills and etc need created for him due to the khemri stuff he can get.

I know and it was never meant to be. The idea is to give fan rules scattered about the interwebs a boost to recognition. No messing with official status.  :)
