Reducing the cost of the most expensive units.
« on: January 25, 2022, 12:12:48 PM »
I would like to gather feedback and evidence on the concept of reducing the cost of the most expensive units in Warmaster, to make them more cost effective, promote their usage in competitive play, and validate their inclusion in player's model collections.

Warmaster Revolution has in my opinion improved the effectiveness of Infantry on the battlefield, whilst reducing the effectiveness of Cavalry, Chariots and Monsters, especially single stand monsters. This has occurred due to the restrictions of 2 rounds of combat against the same unit and the removal of charge bonus attacks on advance moves. Infantry with a good save and / or 4 hits per stand can now survive 2 rounds of combat even when charged by expensive hammer units.

The current rules prevent the heaviest hitters from dominating the game in the way they previously could in original Warmaster, so the original points values of the most expensive Monster and Cavalry units require a re think in my opinion.

I have identified the following units as the most overpriced when compared to other choices available across all armies. My proposal is that all these units could do with a 10% points reduction, to promote their inclusion in army lists.

"The 200+ club"

Chaos Knights Currently = 200 pts per unit Revised cost = 180 pts per unit

Dragon Ogres Currently = 250 pts per unit Revised cost = 225 pts per unit

Daemon Beasts Currently = 220 pts per unit Revised cost = 200 pts per unit

Rhinox Riders Currently = 220 pts per unit Revised cost = 200 pts per unit

Stegadon Currently = 250 pts per unit Revised cost = 225 pts per unit

Dragon Rider Currently = 300 pts per unit Revised cost = 270 pts per unit

Greater Daemon Currently = 300 pts per unit Revised cost = 270 pts per unit

War Mammoth Currently = 200 pts per unit Revised cost = 180 pts per unit

Note: I am NOT including Araby Elephants in this reduction. They are already significantly Undercosted in my opinion!

If you have any experience of using these units, or playing against them, please let us know how you feel abut this proposed change.

I definitely feel like units in this range are things I'd only ever take in a very friendly game as they are so expensive!  I've only got Chaos, out of these armies - but I have never taken Dragon Ogres.  I use the models I have to proxy Chariots!

All for this. Expensive units CAN be games winners so points value can be justified in that respect but due to the nature of the game it doesn't always work that way. Lowering the point value will obviously make them more attractive as playable units as it means they're a more acceptable risk if they underperform.
It should lead to more varied armies as there's a greater inclination to include 200+ models if the lower value means you can squeak in an extra unit of rank and file or secondary character.
