LOTR BFA Dwarves compatible?
« on: December 10, 2009, 04:11:13 PM »
Mulling over picking up the battle of the five armies set.

First, the game looks interesting in and of itself.

Second, playing with a spreadsheet, it appears the contents would be useful in building up a small goblin army for an opposition force...

Third, with massive numbers of Dwarven warriors to paint, having any model diversity will help in not going insane :)

Does anyone here have the Battle of the Five Armies set?

Would the models work well side by side with Warmaster models?

Thanks!

I have been slowly selling off portions of my BOFA set, but I think I still have the dwarves and goblins figures.  FWIW the scale is just slightly off... which is probably more of a problem for Dwarves than goblins... and less of a problem than you would think on the gaming table.

My suggestion, by the way, would be to get a good pair of clippers and look for places where you can clip your strips into smaller groups of dwarves -- this particularly for rangers and gunners, but also for TS and possibly warriors.

I think they look fine, they are a little less chunky than metals however. You could use them as beardlings.

I also think they look fine. The size difference is noticeable, but not enough to make them look strange on the table. When I got my BoFA set, it made Orcs and elves viable for me (didn't have to buy full armies worth of models), and I used the wolves as dire wolves for vampire counts.
Don't discount the terrain they include either. The hill and ruins are pretty useful. Even the cardboard river comes in handy once in a while.

I have got 8 units of them in my dwarf army, they look fine.
They also double up as militia from one of the fan armies recently published.

The BOTFA box is a great way to start a WM army, I have used all the plastics in one army or another and on the table the very slight scale difference is not noticeable.

I recomend the game, the figures are nicely sculpt and the different size is not a problem for me. The games makes lots of fun, and they have extra scenarios (ones better than others).

It's just a shame the metal models aren't available anymore. I didn't have the money spare when they were, probably still don't now. But I would have liked to have had a set of each. It's also a shame they didn't expand on the game to cover the larger battles in the Lord of the Rings itself, or even those from previous ages of Middle Earth...
