Minor tweaks to the armies
« on: December 15, 2011, 08:43:05 AM »
Do you think it's worth trying to do our own version of army lists?

Overall i think warmaster is very close to having balanced armies, but the reason i ask is i still read posts that say ...."i've never won a game with my orc army" or ...."I don't use the high elf list from the core rules because they're too powerfull"

If we do this, we could present it as optional. I play quite a few boardgames with a group of friends, he goes on a site that has ideas for balancing the game. The articles are presented with titles such as "if you are finding that X wins all the time, then try this minor tweak"

I know Blood Bowl has it's own living rulebook, i was thinking the same with Warmaster.

What do you think?
 ;D

EDIT... it also gives us a chance to include rules for extra units that don't have rules if we think it's worth it. For example greatswords for Empire, swordmasters for High Elves. I like the abstract nature of warmaster, and don't want it bogged down with lots of special rules, so unsure about new rules for units. Just an idea.

PS. obviously there's a few army lists i wouldn't be able to comment on, because i've never used them or battled against them (eg. Ogre kingdoms, lizardmen, skaven)

I would advise that you do this "within your group" rather than trying to impose your groups expereince based ideas onto others who may or may not agree. It risks just causing lots of arguments and many outside your group may just ignore the tweaks anyway.

A lot of effort was put into tweaking the rules and lists in the last year or two but nothing really came of it for this reason. e.g. the Austrian group and one of the UK groups still play with different house rules (and that's absolutely fine).

Just my idea anyway.

Yeah, i totally agree. I did put the same in my original post, then edited it.

Problem with my group is there's only one person that's willing to put anything at all into the hobby (me)
The other players just have free fully painted armies. I think it would be unfair if i just turned up with lots of house rules.

Think i'll just stick as it is. Ah well, was just an idea.

Do you know Compendium 2009 and its Tournament Army lists with quite some modifications and also trial army for Kislev to complete the alterantive versions of offcial army lists?

If you're looking to balance things without using house rules, you could experiment with using different types/amounts of terrain. In our games we've found, for example, that the power of cavalry is well countered by the judicious use of hills, rivers, woods etc.

Yes I agree. We've started using more hills and since then my orcs haven't lost a game against brets. I think you can win with any army in WM, you're not doomed after deployment  ;D it just seems slightly easier with some.
We've also used a few house rules from WM ancients to make infantry slightly better (support before kills, push back reduced depending on units involved etc)

In my opinion you need to cover at least one third of the surface area of the table with terrain of some sort (a lot of it can be open stuff like fields) to limit the power of cavalry.

We allow infantry to attack in column and move up in support of other infantry (WMA style) to boost them a bit.

We also tend to play scenarios which victory conditions depend on taking/holding terrain i.e. you can't win if you just max out on Knights!

Has anyone amended the Warmaster Fantasy lists to include the special rules from WMA & WMM ie adding Shock/Knights to heavy cavalry, Skirmishing rule to some light cavalry/infantry, Warband to orcs/goblins etc, if not i think it would make a good project and would make some significant changes to the way some armies play?

As far as I undestand the best option is to download it from the bottom of this page:
