[ID] Bretonian bowmen?
« on: July 01, 2012, 06:01:55 PM »
Hello,

I bought in internet a bundle of some WM figures. All were GW and included some OOP bretonian infantery.

Also there were some bowmen strips I don't identify. Under the strips they are marked as B1 and B2.

For the casting I think it could be GW. I don't know any other maker that bases the bowmen in a strip. The dress of the soldiers is from the 100 years war. Does any know if GW made bretonian bowmen for test models as in infantery?  Any idea of what they can be?

Thanks

And there is no "break" in the strip to make the 2 deep lines for WM

I have them too. I have classed them as unreleased. The full Bretonnian range was cast before the game was released, to test it (well, it's what i was told). And then the army was recast with final actual figs. They are rare but not as rare as some other unreleased, because there was a large quantity of each unit cast for play testing the game.

You can see all unreleased stuff here :

Ahh, good eye marell!

It is both fascinating and sad - models that disappeared before their time, there. =-/

I think that Dogs of War unit is an Empire strip with the halberds clipped a little to make spears. Not a bad idea for a conversion (I might give it a go!) but I doubt that it's any more than that.

Yep. On the other hand, they where from the beginning destined to test only the game. Seems some of them escaped to rejoin the new bretonnian forces and fight for her magesty again !

Nope. The whole unit is different. Helmets, positions, etc. Lex told me they where created for a Lustriani presentation and more or less available for those who helped during this day as gifts.

I'm not convinced (not that it's important) that this is a unique sculpt. The command strip in GW's store is practically identical. If you snipped off the feathers, trimmed the halberds into spears and snipped the top off the standard I think you'd get the same unit. It even looks like the feather from the standard bearer (which is attached to the banner) has been scraped away (hence the slightly scruffy look to the banner at that point) and the fact that one of them has a halberd (the one which is moulded to the banner) seems to confirm this (why would you sculpt one halberd in a spear unit?).

Here's the unit I mean:

And the unrealeased spearmen:

I guess I could be wrong here (though I don't think I am!).

It seems like the axe and the pike of the halberdier has been cut off roughly and that is the unreleased "dogs of war"

Looking at the pictures, it seems a Empire unit with small parts cut-off

I agree with you, the DOW unit was made with from an empire unit, but it's not just a conversion after cutting parts. It's an independent mold and cast.

They took the sprue, modified it and recasted it to make this new unit.

As it was just for a demo during one day, i suppose it was justified.

Ah, I see,  that's a rather different thing to what I was imagining constituted an unreleased miniature (to me it's a cast-up version of a basic conversion but that's really not important).

The best thing about this is that the conversion idea is an excellent one and it looks like it would be very easy to replicate in order to make some units of Empire spearmen (I'd be tempted to leave the feathers on and to lengthen the spear shafts a little).

You're right, the "unreleased" label is a little bit abused, maybe.
