How many players of Warmaster in the World?
« on: August 21, 2012, 01:22:29 AM »
Hi everyone!,

Since this is an opened forum for all the people in the world, i think this is the best place to leave my question.

Which country has more percentage of Warmaster players?, We all know that this specialist game has been abandoned by his creator and it seems that GW is not going to do anything in order to release this game in the near future, ... but i have seen more activity in other countries (for example, in Spain this game is not very popular but in France there are a lot of followers more, ...).

Is active this game in your country?, more than France or Poland?. Is UK the greatest fan of the game?, Maybe Germany?,  What do you feel in your respective countries?, Can we count the number of users in this forum by country?.

Thank you very much for attending my stupid question  :-[

A very difficult question. How would you decide a player is active? Does it count if he just posts in this forum or if he just plays with his friend once year? If he plays campaigns with three others? Or does it only count if he is attending tournaments?
Is it important if he uses different WM rules? For example the french community as far as I know uses a mix of Warmaster and Warmaster Ancients rules..

For example in my 10 years playing history I knew for sure more than 30 WM players who used to play in the Austrian area of Vienna, Lower Austria and Styria. Most of them still have their armies as far as I know - but if I organise a tournament I am happy to get 8 players together at the moment.

In addition to the community in Austria as far as I read in forums/know from my worldwide campaign 2 years ago ...  there was/is a big community in poland, there are some smaller communities in GB, there's a big community in france (with different rules), there are some scattered players in germany and spain and of course there must be some playing groups in the States...

Greetings,
Gerald

You are fully right, this question is an utopia, but somehow i 'd like to know how many followers there are in the world. And you have given to me an idea for european players :-)

No matter if people play with some home rules, fantasy, BOFA or ancients, or go to tournaments or not, i'm looking for those that play to the game as often as they can (always seizing the opportunity, i don't mind the number of battles in a year if they want to play more)... It's very difficult to define a criteria, ... I absolutelly agree with you but maybe i can have an abstract idea with the experience of the forum users  ;D

Thanks a lot for your anwser, Gerald, i have found it very useful ^^

Is UK the greatest fan of the game?
I'd say the UK warmaster players are very rare. I've seen anyone else play the game, the only people i know that play in UK (apart from handfull of a people on here) are me and a few friends... and they only play because i arrange it all.

We have a few games at WHworld and whenever we do we get people coming to look at our figures because it's a very unusal sight. Personally i think WM is very very rare in UK

There are people like me who are interested but are finding it hard to paint an army - and my local group have an abundance of games they are currently interested in playing, so you have to put a lot of effort in and offer 2 armies if you want to run test games and get other opponents...

Wow, i though UK could be the biggest players manufacturer!!

I have understood very well what you, Calmacil and Stormwind, have said. In fact i'm in the same situation with my friends, i have six warmaster armies, and they are playing because of that. Though in 2000, when the game born, we played with cardboard bases full of thumbtacks, great years!!!

I play precious little but i live the passion for playing every day, participating in forums, collecting miniatures or terrain or whatever involved to the game (so i see me like a big fan).

I'd like to play much more and convince my friends to have their own armies (to have all of them, Empire also though i hate the look of that army XD), but they are in the same situation with me in other games. I can not claim much, anyway ;-)

I also think it is very rarely played in the UK. I only get games by making my friends play. There us very little mention of people here playing on the various gaming forums. BB and Epic do well though and both communities have grown a lot over recent years.

My guess is France, their forum seems fairly active and their annual campaign, which I think Vincent runs, looks absolutely superb.

To my mind, a key factor in developing the game lies in the tournament scene. Two key examples are Blood Bowl, which I watched grow massively in the UK and it was largely due to a relatively small number of very enthusiastic tournament/league organisers (a friend and I set up a league/tournament that brought together a lot of playuers in the NW of England and which now has a really vibrant league/tournament scene. I think I could find a game of BB round here almost any night of the week and with a different player every time). Epic Armageddon is a more 'current' example with players in the UK getting much more organised over the last three years. Again, I wouldn't expect it be be hard to find someone to play.

But, both BB and EA had reasonably large online fanbases. WM seems to lack this so getting something started would take a lot of energy.

There's 6 very active warmaster players in the chorley/preston/southport north west part of the UK (Lancashire/Sefton areas). Between us we have every singe official warmaster army going (and about half of the trial armies). They're not all painted yet but the ones thata re are LARGE (>4K) and some VERY LARGE (10K). We tend to play large games on large tables.

Thank you ;D

In France the forum gather only a sub-part of the active players.
We found out that most players are "only" playing in their own community without communicating on the forum.
On the forum, there is about 6-10 active players in Lyon, 4-6 in Paris, and about 4-5 scattered in France.

French players are mostly active during autumn and winter.

Moving from WM rules to WMA rules helped a lot to keep existing players and get new one.

I haven't worked out how to download pictures? Yes, I know that's pathetic but I really am clueless at things like this - I can word process, surf the internet and can manage outlook express and e mails but that's it.

Also, the only camera I have is a blackberry phone camera and the quality of the warmaster photos I have taken are awful.

One of my friends keep threatening to come round with his posh camera and take loads of shots of all my stuff and download it all for me but he never actually seems to manage to do it. Sorry.

Vincent, i hace seen your forum, and i really envy your armies and games, i play not vy often. Have you got your Houserules translated into english or another language (my french is worst day by day, from high school since i don't use it ), i mean with Houserules to the rules of WMA that you have adapted and those that you don't with your own touch included ^_^ (it would be great if you coyld share that with this community).

David... 10k points!!!!???, Which is the bigger battle you have played?, always i thought that Warmaster (and in general, all wargames) doesn't work with more than 3000 points.

We've played 4k a side several times in my group, though the largest army I personally own is 3k. The monetary cost gets prohibitive though. 5k of Skaven (from GW) costs somewhere around $1100 right now. This is one reason I've taken to WMA; if I go to 5k my Romans will only cost around $350 total before shipping.
