proxy ideas: Wood Elf
« on: December 31, 2013, 03:39:28 PM »
So here is my take on the Wood Elf army list based on Eureka’s great 10mm fantasy miniatures line that you can also find on my blog: http://www.athens-fantasy.gr/2013/12/wood-elves-warmaster-without-gw-miniatures/

Some of the offered miniature packs include a variety of figures that can be split so that they can be used for a variety of warmaster troop types. For this reason I have numbered the different poses in the pictures I copied from Eureka’s web site:

Glade Guard
[Eureka 400FAN07] figures 2,6,7

Waywatchers
[Eureka 400FAN07] figures 1,6

Eternal Guard
[Eureka 400FAN08] figures 1,6,8

Wardancers
[Eureka 400FAN08] figures 2,7

Glade Riders
[Eureka 400FAN24] figures 1,5

Wild Riders
[Eureka 400FAN24] figures 2,3,4

Warhawk riders
[Eureka 400FAN24] Elves mounted on falcons

Treeman
[Eureka 400FAN18] Wood trolls
or Demonworld Tree Shepherd

Dryads
[Eureka 400FAN19] Woodland Creatures (includes 15 Wood Hags)

General
Orion figure from [Eureka 400FAN19] woodland creatures pack

Spell Weaver
Unicorn riding Sorceress figure from [Eureka 400FAN19] woodland creatures pack

Noble
Champion figure from [Eureka 400FAN07], [Eureka 400FAN08]. [Eureka 400FAN24]

Forest Dragon
Some suitably sized 15mm dragon (e.g. Demonworld)

And since another forum member (Helge - http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?action=profile;u=9775) has already painted a wood elf army you can see pictures and other ideas on the following forum post:

I should also mention the Magister Militum Elves as an option for some of the troop types:

Don't forget this excellent Treeman and possible scenery add ons in the form of dryads from Splintered Light miniatures.

The "Wood Hags" that Eureka produce are also repackaged as Fae Sprytes under the "Fanticide" rules system. You get 30 in a packet instead of 15 and so is a way to buy Dryads for warmaster without getting overloaded with Orion / Sorceress / hunting hound figures.

These won't last much longer but I've ordered 6 packs of these, with the eye on using 2 as Glade Riders.

Just adding my blog here - using your ideas, and a few of my own, I put together a shopping list for Wood Elves. It's in a blog entry with Vampire Counts, but...it may offer some ideas anyway.

Just a few notes on possible models for WE juggling up price/availability/desirability:

Standard 28mm GW Dryads are a better Treeman model than just about any of the others being produced but as Treemen aren’t anatomically demanding its worth having a crack at sculpting your own. You’ll probably find the hardest bit making a pose you like.
I would like to see the army list add Treeman as a monster option -/1 limit with giant-ish sort of stats.
This bloke looks the ducks nuts as either general or Treeman proxy:
http://miniature-heroes.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=653_692&products_id=29697

The best glade guard models are the Copplestone Rangers. https://www.copplestonecastings.co.uk/prod.php?prod=257 Other possibilities from Copplestone are the human riders (good horses) and there is a decent mounted elf in the goodies character pack.
The horses are better than just about everyone else’s but I’d have to green stuff the riders a bit to make them satisfactorily Elvish (cloaks/less helmets/cover armour a little bit) and this is a is proper fiddle at 10mm. Alternatively they might just need a lick of green paint and look fine on the table top.
There’s a shot of glade riders that were converted from GW Dark riders which looks 10/10 and would be my first choice but they’re not around at a reasonable price any more. That said please PM me if you’ve got a few units you no longer require.

The Pendraken Witch Elves look good as war dancers from the pics, have to find out in the flesh but can’t see too much going wrong. http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FAN-DEL6-p7643/ Oh for the agro of trying and failing & re-painting the tattoos.
Pendraken are also the right price & have half decent sculpts. They’ve made an effort toward pose variation which deserves applause & support. Archers look good, the warriors I’m not so sure about, but the War band packs are stellar value and probably look fine on the table I’m just being fussy.
http://www.pendraken.co.uk/Warband-Fantasy-NEW-c36/Wood-Elves-sc337/
I’ve also got some Pendraken centaurs which I’ll be using as wild riders/ glade riders. Once again these sculpts are a bit ‘short’ for me. A wee bit skinny here a wee bit samey there but that said they have made a greater # of variants now. After I bought these or I just didn’t realise they were different. The ones I’ve got I’ve had to green stuff a bit to get them approaching the look I want. http://www.pendraken.co.uk/FAN-TAU3-p7286/

Magister Militum have a few decent options and the giant deer/moose are great. There’s a lot of unit options available but I’d have to be sure that archer with the contortionist arm looked OK if there’s only 2 variants in the pack. Once again - priced right.

Eureka – Well documented in post above but I have mixed feelings. They’re just a bit small in my experience. I bought a mixed pack of forest creatures to use as sprites for the 28mm Treeman model I made years ago. The stags were outstanding and remain the best choice as wild riders but the riders were too small for me. Positively titchy. Eureka dryads were certainly the pick of a very small bunch but don’t really do it for me. I’ll be making my own.
Their WE characters look good but I didn’t buy these.
Eureka sculpts on the whole are 10/10 I’m just not sold on the scale but they’re probably spot on 10mm exactly and everything else is too big. The problem is that I have access to UK minis no problem and that pretty much covers everything else. As much as I’d love to support the Aussie cousins I find the price a wee bit steep at £8 for a unit (albeit a 30 fig unit). I really have to wait for Salute or when I’m visiting down south as postage pushes them into the too expensive basket.

I’ll be looking to using the smallest Reaper bones dragons (Hatchlings) I can find as Warhawk riders/Eagles. I figure that a baby dragon breath attack could proxy for the archers. Warhawk rider options are around just not spot on with what I’m after. They look kind of off/ the bird is just too small and it shouldn’t matter but I can’t get past it. I’ve got 3 dragons, one is too big but I’ll paint one up and show them here at some point shortly. There’s a treekin-ish figure in the familiars set as well which others might like but isn’t for me.

Fighting 15s stock Eureka stuff in the UK.  Not cheap but makes postage less of a worry.

Yes the Eureka models are small which is a shame.  I think I'm just going to accept that they're not perfect or I'll spend forever trying to find the "right" ones or worse, forever doing some super fiddly conversions.

I have Dark Elves I'm using as:

Spearmen: Eternal Guard
Dark Riders: Glade Riders
Witch Elves: Wardancers

Now they are not easy to get hold of at all, I must admit.  They are much smaller than say, the Empire or High Elves models.  Not quite small enough to match Eureka but I think a better match than other GW ranges.

---

I believe the DE conversion you are referring to are by this fellow:

http://thebrushsquig.blogspot.co.uk/search/label/10mm

Wonderful work, I wish I could see his full army.  His choice of the splintered light treeman is what made me buy mine.  It just fits on a standard Warmaster base facing the narrow side if you clip it's metal base a little.  I would argue it looks better than using a 28mm Dryad but htis is personal preference.  The dryads in plastic are beautiful models but they are quite feminine and graceful, especially their faces whereas my preference is for something more "Entish".

I've thought of kit bashing my own Orion, but I'm not sure I could make it look as good as this one...

That Dave C was one talented bastard. Pity he's given it away.
