Went to see Captain America: Winter Soldier with my Dad last week and thoroughly enjoyed it! Better than the original and felt like another part of the Marvel universe which is kind of the point of these films; that you are enjoying part of a larger story.

Finally got rid of the crumb snatchers for an afternoon and made it out to see Edge of Tomorrow. Say what you want about about Tom Cruise being a whack job in real life, he does have screen presence and the ability to pull off dark humor which was quite prevalent (especially with Emily Blunt's, well.. Blunt executions through the training montage. The end was a bit cheese but and I wish they played up the whole battle fatigue / PTSD angle they touched on a bit more but solid 8/10 summer action flick.
As we Imperials say, "The Emperor [class battleship] Protects..."

Didn't go to the cinema for months and months, and recently have gone to see two movies.....

Transformers: Age of Extinction: (Preface, I am a massive TF nut.) Its... OK. I thought that it was generally better written than the previous outings, with almost no dumb school humour or casual racism, but that left it with a simple plot that never really got to a meaningful climax. Also, the robots actually had characterisations, and the voice actors not only were asked to actually act, but pulled it off. Although all the Bots came across well portrayed, Prime and his slow regression into PTSD was a great performance. Its just a shame that while the Bots got a lot more character, a) they were largely unlikeable, and b) the villains were pretty throw away. We only really got Lockdown, who was a neat bad guy and something different, while the entire remainder of the opposition were clearly just being set up for a sequel, to the point that they are just ignored by the Bots as the credits roll. Personally, I preferred Dark of the Moon, and would put this on a par with the first movie, although the first one probably just edges it out for being new and for the opening scene with Blackout, which has never been surpassed to my mind. Still, AoE knocks RotF out of its seat, but that's not difficult. Also, if you are going to see this just for the Dinobots..... don't rush to the cinema. You can afford to be about 2 hours late to your seat for this one.

Guardians of the Galaxy: This has got great reviews in nerd spheres, and its a pretty good movie. The humour is great and spot on, the pacing is pretty good and its best feature is that its a very well realised story and environment. But..... I couldn't help coming away feeling a little disappointed, partly because of the hype, I guess. I found the general writing to be poor, and full of plot holes, and while this is clearly a sacrifice for a sequel in a lot of cases, its just lazy writing and shouldn't really be excused. Its a shame, because there is a lot here to really like, but I cant reflect on the movie without the bitter taste of some serious dropped balls and plot devices that are very weak and would have been picked to death if they had happened in 90% of other films.

Next, I really want to see TMNT...... Now I have got over the horror of actually going to the cinema on my own, I think that I actually prefer seeing movies this way. Does that make me old, lonely and sad?  :o

Interesting review of 'Guardians' Cybershadow, perhaps it was your expectations that slayed it?

My alternative take - I went into that movie with low expectations (dragged there by a friend and I was expecting a silly, "B Movie."). They nailed it for me. I laughed out loud at the humour (nerdy and somewhat immature but very clever). Best sci fi movie of the year so far for me and I look forward to the sequel.

I think that this is certainly a part of it. I almost never go to see a film in the first week, and by the second week, Twitter was alive with how great this film is, how its the best Marvel film since Capt America 2 and the Avengers, etc. So, that was a massive amount of hype to live up to, and it really couldnt.

On top of that, I dont want to come across as someone who hated it. I didnt. Its a good, fun movie and I would watch it again or even get it on DVD if it was a decent price. It was a good package. Well written, genuinely funny and fun, and really well realised as a movie.

But.... I do think that the writing was, at points, incredibly lazy.
For example....
"So, Peter, after being told so many times that getting close to this galaxy destroying crystal would kill anyone at all, just when the plot needed it you managed to grab hold of it and not die. Ummm.... How did you do that."

"Well, we secretly scanned his DNA without him realising, while he was on a spaceship in combat, and it turns out his father wasnt human."

Dun dun daaaaaaa

OK, nobody want to hear any more about that then? Nope? Nothing was said about his dad not being in the picture in his life or that he never knew his father.... No explanations at all? Good. Moving on....
Or....
"So, you two girls are the daughters of Thanos then?"

"Actually, we are adopted."

Awesome, lets just leave that there then and not explain any more about that at all.... Great. I am sure it will come up in the sequel...
You're right of course, there's so many holes in parts of the plot line you could drive a bus through them.
But I never let that get in the way of a good, fun story/set of characters.

The same could be true for Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones (two of my all time favourite fantasy franchises/series) but I don't let that spoil them. I guess its that old chestnut of whether or not/to what extent we bring our "willing suspension of disbelief" with us to each particular film.

Absolutely adored Guardians of the Galaxy. Just like Avengers, it's got dumb holes in it - but when you consider that the standard of popcorn action movie has been set as low as Michael Bay has put it - it's pretty amazing!

Would rather have a metal rod pushed through my gonads than watch another TFers film.

Guardians was AWESOME!  8). I have been pumped for this so hard for years and I have to say that I was 100% pleased with what I received  ;D. I really felt it more then delivered on the hype, even my wife was really into it and shes been over the whole superhero thing since Spiderman 2... the first Spiderman 2... Ya...

Going to see Guardians next week. The Avengers was only a 7/10 to me by the way.

Spoilers ahead:
And on Transformers: Age of Extinction:
I do not agree completely with Cybershadow. First of all I think the first one from 2007 is still the best in the series. It got a good story, good balance and good action scenes. Yes the Blackout scene in the beginning is great but I also like to add the chase between Barricade and Bumblebee and the Scorponok attack on the village. Classical Transformer moments. This movie is in my personal all time top 10.

Revenge of the Fallen, even with all its bad things (humour), drifting plot weirdness, I still like this movie. The opening scene is good, the forest battle great. And Jetfire. :)
It is a movie which I know is not good but I still would watch this sooner then much higher rated movies or better made movies. Just because, you know.

Dark of the Moon is better then RotF. Ofcourse. It even tries to do a good introduction story. But then it fails in editing, the street car chase (not minding the use of old material from the Island here) lacked in what the f was Sentinel doing. And in the end bits suddenly all Autobots are captured. That was crappy. Still liked the movie though.

Then Age of Extinction. This movie falls back to the first in terms of storytelling. It also gives a lot of nods to the old '80 comics as well as to the newer ones of IDW. The movie also shows how capable how Michael Bay as a director is. The movie did a good thing in having more attention for the Transformers then the humans compared to the previous two movies. But the human story was okay (my wife really liked the story and loves the whole movie).  And as long as Steven Spielberg remains the executive producer the humans will remain the main focus. Per example: Bay wanted that Optimus finished Megatron in the first movie, Spielberg told him that Sam should do it as it was "Sam's movie".
Plotwise I liked it. Megatron / Galvatron finally had a plan that worked. First time in the movies, or g1 cartoons. ;)

To me Michael Bay is currently the best blockbuster director. And I am curious how another director will fare with this franchise.

Oh,
still looking forward to Jupiter Ascending.
:)

It could even be THE theatre if we want to make it an all inclusive, middle class fest!
Othello anyone? :)
